Location: New Orleans,LA, USA
The Lab Supervisor I is responsible for oversight of projects and equipment in a helminth infection and mucosal immunology research laboratory, as well as the supervision and training of lab personnel. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and the coordination of repair and/or maintenance of the labs with facilities services and/or vendors. This position will also involve developing and troubleshooting immunological assays including cytokine analysis, qPCR arrays, and maintaining breeding colonies for all knockout animals and supervising animal husbandry. The position will also involve assisting in training and supervising graduate students and post-docs. This individual will also serve as the laboratory safety representative and work with the Department Safety Representative and OEHS.
* Ability to train and/or teach lab personnel the proper use of scientific equipment particularly animal behavior and neuron manipulation.
* Familiarity with microscopes, autoclaves, electrophoresis, recombinant DNA technologies, PCR, protein purification, media preparation, chemical solution preparation, tissue culture and histological techniques.
* Ability to manage chemical inventories and order for supplies multiple laboratories.
* Ability to independently design and execute experiments related to the overall laboratory goals and objectives.
* Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
* Ability to work with the DSR and OEHS to coordinate implementation of safety measures and serve as laboratory safety representative.
* Ability to keep electronic notebooks.
* Ability to work with animals, including immunizations and collection of tissues for assay.
* Computer skills and software knowledge.
SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University's Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
* Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree in a biological science.
* 3 years of directly related work experience.
* Master's Degree in biological sciences
* Experience in electronic record keeping.
* Experience in graphic display of experimental data.
