Reports To: Director of Laboratory FLSA Classification: Full-Time, non-exempt, hourly Wage range $31.00 - $47.01/per hour depending on experiencePioneers Medical Center will lead the effort to improve the health and wellbeing of our community.The working environment is a hospital setting with exposure to patients, residents, and families; sharps,infectious diseases, biological and chemical hazards; machinery and equipment; and potentially extremetemperatures and noise levels. Employees are required to follow all safety practices and protocols at alltimes.Essential Functions- Perform diagnostic procedures on blood and body fluids, collect specimens frompatients, perform various laboratory tests, and analyze results.- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.- Perform various clerical duties as assigned or needed.- Perform laboratory testing in an accurate and timely manner.- Perform procedures in all sections of the lab: chemistry, hematology, urine, coagulation,blood bank, microbiology, and blood gases.- Assure all assigned laboratory duties are performed accurately.- Interpret and correlate clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinicalcondition in order to explain test results so that appropriate action can be taken.- Utilize complex problem solving skills in resolving clinical and instrumental problems.- May provide technical education and guidance to students and staff by overseeing workperformance in support of educational programs resulting in a continuous learningenvironment.- Work effectively as a team member within the department and with other units toprovide quality patient care through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.- Provide appropriate Laboratory services to meet the needs of patients within PMC'sability.- Assure evidence-based practices within the Laboratory.- Direct, supervise, and coordinate functions and activities for the laboratory.- Assist with Laboratory patient care services, including discussion of test procedures withMedical Staff; test technology and data generation; data evaluation, interpretation, andcommunication; quality assurance.- Assist with the purchase and order of inventory and supplies.- Supervise all testing and PMS in department, and when other departments are utilizinglab supplies and diagnostics.- Evaluate laboratory equipment and assist and advise in its acquisition.- Support administration and physicians in problem solving within the laboratory.- Attend and participate in meetings as required.- Provide for necessary personnel coverage by preparing work assignments to ensurework is done in a timely manner and that the department has proper staffing coverage.- Conduct laboratory tests as ordered by Medical Staff, prioritizing critical resulting.- Receive or obtain specimens by proper technique for use in diagnosis and treatment ofdisease.- Properly package, label, preserve, and send out specimens for procedures notcompleted in house, as required by regulatory agencies.- Notify ordering physicians of any abnormalities in test results or specimens.- Mentor, train, supervise, and complete annual evaluations and competencies for allemployees within your department.- Assist with the annual implementation, review, revision, and management ofdepartment policies, procedures, workflows, job descriptions, and other essentialdocuments unspecified.- Interview, evaluate candidates, and hire new employees in collaboration with HumanResources and established PMC guidelines.- Maintain accurate department records and statistics.- Other duties as assigned.Education and Experience- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or medical technology school required.- At least four (4) years' experience in a laboratory setting required.- At least two (2) years' managerial experience preferred.- Registration as a medical laboratory technologist required.- BLS required within three (3) months of transfer or hire.Skills and Expectations- Kind and professional demeanor.- Professional and well-groomed appearance at all times.- Communicate positively and effectively, both written and verbally, with patients, family,and staff.- Demonstrate effective organizational skills in an evolving environment.- Work with honesty, compassion and integrity at all times.- Understand and adhere to the scope of service for the department and this position.- Understand and adhere to all of PMC's policies and procedures.- Understand and adhere to PMC's Code of Conduct.- Adhere to the strictest confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.- Demonstrate a commitment to building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, andequitable working environment.- Ability to remain calm and efficient in emergency situations.- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.- Demonstrate strong emotional intelligence.Physical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by anemployee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
