What you'll doA Laboratory Support Technician performs blood specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples. The LST orders laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System, processes, files requisitions, processes specimens for testing, prepares samples to be sent to reference laboratories for testing and processes test results that were referred to other reference laboratories. Answers telephone as necessary. The LST will follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedure.
- Identifies all patients by verifying name, date of birth, as well as verifying medical record number against Epic and/or the paper requisition prior to specimen collection. Performs routine/STAT phlebotomy after verifying patient's identity. Labels specimens in the presence of the patient
- Communicates with all patients, explaining the procedure, answering questions and providing information in a manner that assures confidentiality and handles health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations
- Collects appropriate and high-quality specimens for all tests ordered (venous and capillary) from all age groups. Routinely works in an efficient manner, regularly meeting the draw standard of 7-9 inpatients and 8-10 outpatients per hour and assists coworkers when work in the assigned area is complete
- Reviews all specimens and requisitions or batch logs to assure that the appropriate specimen for each test ordered has been collected, each specimen meets the quality requirements, and had been appropriately labeled. Validates that all specimens were transported appropriately and have been received, completing incident reports or other applicable reports when there is a variance. Completes all receiving steps following established Laboratory guidelines
- Receives the batch and/or specimen in the LIS, entering required information as needed. For tests that have not been entered into the LIS, enters all practitioner orders accurately. Delivers STAT, urgent or other specimens that are processed in the technical area in a timely manner
- Processes all specimens accurately, consistently relabels and/or aliquots specimens, maintaining specimen integrity. Delivers specimens that are performed within the lab promptly and prepares specimens to be sent to reference labs accurately following established Laboratory policies to meet expected turnaround times
- Consistently follows all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures
- Assists with training of new staff as requested
- Completes responsibilities defined on the laboratory's task lists
- Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice
What we need from youEducation:
- High School Diploma or GED, required
Experience:
- One year of experience in similar capacity, preferred
License/ Certification:
- CPT-A Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) from training in a formal phlebotomy program which includes a minimum of sixty hours of didactic training and sixty hours of clinical experience, or one hundred observed phlebotomy draws, preferred
