Position Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Polly Hsu at Michigan State University has an opening for a Laboratory Technologist to investigate gene expression and RNA biology in Arabidopsis and crops. Candidates with experience in molecular biology and plant genetics are encouraged to apply. To learn more about the lab:
Duties
+ 70% support research, perform and document project-specific experiments, e.g. generating/identifying/characterizing mutants and transgenic Arabidopsis, DNA/RNA/protein-extraction, qRT-PCR, protoplast isolation, luciferase assays, and western blot, etc.
+ 15% prepare lab reagents and maintain cell cultures
+ 15% assist in lab organization (ordering, organizing/updating chemical inventory and lab materials) and in training future lab members on basic procedures
This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding and mutual agreement.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in molecular biology, biotechnology, biology or a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.
Desired Qualifications
+ Experience in molecular biology and plant genetics: identify and generate transgenic plants and higher-order mutants, DNA/RNA and protein extraction, protoplast isolation, perform gene expression analysis including qRT-PCR, dual luciferase assays, western blot etc., and maintain cell cultures
+ Attention to detail and thoroughness in record-keeping
+ Demonstrated organizational skills
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
+ Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and procedures
