Position Type: Non Instructional - All Titles/Laborer 1 Date Posted: 11/16/2023 Location: Project Control - 355 NEWARK BOARD OF EDUCATION HUMAN RESOURCES SERVICES 765 BROAD STREET, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 07102 ROGER LEÓN, SUPERINTENDENT LABORER 1 Office of Project Control (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval) The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Laborer 1 within the Office of Project Control. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for this position will be placed as a provisional employee. Upon hire, the employee will be required to complete a 90-Day Working test period during which the employee's performance will be evaluated. Employee must successfully complete the designated probation period in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee. DEFINITION: Under direction of a supervisory official, performs varied types of manual and unskilled laboring work and may drive a truck in connection with laboring work on occasion; does other related duties as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate. 2. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. 3. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated. NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority. BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Loads, lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment. 2. Digs trenches and does manual grading. 3. Cleans incinerators. 4. Collects rubbish and other refuse. 5. Cuts grass. 6. Trims hedges. 7. Waters lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds. 8. Loads and unloads trucks. 9. Shovels snow. 10. Whitewashes walls. 11. Shovels gravel and sand. 12. Mixes cement and mortar. 13. Places forms used in concrete work. 14. Performs cold patching. 15. Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, and weeds. 16. Cuts down trees. 17. Digs out stumps of trees, and digs out and destroys poisonous vines, weeds, and undergrowth. 18. Learns to operate construction and/or maintenance. 19. May learn to operate a pneumatic drill. 20. May learn to operate and make minor repairs to street, road, and related public works equipment. 21. May rake asphalt mixtures used in paving to proper thickness and grade. 22. May distribute asphalt mixtures to eliminate hollows and high spots in the surface under the construction or repair. 23. May patch joints and edges of pavement with asphalt cement. 24. May tamp and smooth asphalt pavement. 25. May operate and maintain asphalt heating kettle. 26. May assist in the repair and maintenance of zoo displays and structures. 27. May perform the routine work involved in painting of interior and exterior zoo displays. 28. May handle, when required, animals as necessary in performing routine maintenance and repair of zoo displays and structures. 29. Cleans sludge beds. 30. Sweeps streets. 31. Cleans sewers. 32. Pries and hammers apart sections of wall and roof. 33. Loads debris into truck for removal. 34. Sorts, piles, and cleans salvageable brick, stone, lumber, and metal work. 35. Under direction, may learn to make routine repairs to valves, fittings, pipe sections or other equipment used in the area of assignment. 36. Occasionally drives trucks. 37. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. 38. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES 1. Knowledge of the methods, materials and supplies used to perform varied types of manual and unskilled tasks. 2. Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group. 3. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions. 4. Ability to follow prescribed instructions. 5. Ability to learn to use the tools and equipment needed to perform routine, unskilled labor tasks. 6. Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment. 7. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. 8. Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. 9. Salary Range: $46,222 - $53,998 (salary range updated for SY 2024-2025) 2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) month 3.
