The Department of State Police is seeking to fill the position of Laborer II. This position performs various manual labor
tasks in support of various skilled tradesmen and craftsmen. They will maintain cleanliness and upkeep of all Troop H
State Police facilities inside and outside; performs snow removal; maintains grounds by cutting lawns, pruning trees and
shrubs, installing attachments; and operating motor vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Responsible for cleaning State Police Barracks, job duties include cleaning, waxing, polishing, and buffing floors,
windows, woodwork, toilets, washrooms, and fixtures.
* Responsible for providing basic repairs requiring the use of handheld power tools such as drills, saws etc., including the
gym, kitchen, and administrative office area.
* Supervises work groups of laborers on special projects and performs functions of Maintenance Foreman in his absence.
* Monitors work of various contract vendors as far as installation, repair or replacement work performed by these vendors.
* Responsible for installing and un-installing window air conditioning units. May be required to move furniture including, but
not limited to, desks, tables, chairs, and file cabinets.
* May operate tractors, electric trimmers, light automotive trucks and other similar maintenance and construction
equipment as required.
* Performs routine manual labor tasks as assigned in assisting mechanics, carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers and
steamfitters, masons and other skilled tradesmen engaged in maintenance repair and construction work.
* Performs routine manual labor tasks in connection with maintenance, care and upkeep such as cutting grass, removing
weeds and brush, and spreading mulch.
* Sweeps sidewalks, rakes lawns, hauls debris, shovels snow, sands driveways and walkways in connection with snow
removal.
* Performs related duties such as light painting and other duties as required by the Troop H Major or designee.
* Will be required to travel to other State Police facilities outside of Troop H in order to deliver or retrieve materials,
equipment, or other supplies.
* This position is designated as emergency personnel and will be required to report to work during emergency
situations.
Qualifications Required at Hire:
* Skill in using small hand tools such as hammers, pliers, saws, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
* Skill in using small, mechanized hand tools such as drills, saws, etc.
* Skill in using simple motorized equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, forklifts, dollies, etc.
* Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
* Ability to give clear, concise instructions.
* Knowledge of the type, properties, quality and uses of cleaning supplies and equipment, and their effect on the various
types of construction and finishes.
* Ability to care for mops, brushes, and other cleaning equipment, as well as plows, shovels and lawnmowers.
* Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under varying weather conditions.
License and/or Certification Requirements:
Possession of a valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license.
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least six months of full-time, or equivalent part- time experience in performing manual labor in connection with general construction or maintenance work.
