Job Summary: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of general manual labor tasks, including, but not limited to, lifting and moving materials, loading and unloading vehicles, hand digging and backfilling excavations, and other activities in a helping or assisting mode. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Below is a compilation of primary duties and responsibilities for this role, supplemented by certain supportive tasks. - Assist in the installation of all types of underground utilities (Water, Sewer, Storm, Power, Gas, and Telecommunications).
- Excavate trenches and pits with hand tools to desired depth. Place and compact backfill material around pipe and structures.
- Assist in work area layout and setting up string line and grade stakes.
- Effectively signal equipment operators during excavation and backfilling operations.
- Safely operate pneumatic and power tools for pipe connections, cutting/beveling, drilling, break-up of concrete and asphalt, and tampering material.
- Use hand tools to place and finish concrete, place, and level asphalt, and mix cement/aggregate bags with water.
- Safely install and remove trench shoring.
- Perform traffic and pedestrian control duties as needed.
- Keep work area, vehicles, and equipment clean and free of debris.
- Comply with company policies and union regulations for a safe and productive work environment.
Qualifications:
- Education/Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Certificates/License: valid driver's license in good standings (must be 18 years of age or older to operate a company vehicle).
- Interpersonal Skills: ability to maintain positive working relationships with employees and members of management.
- Leadership: actively working to grow and develop leadership skills.
- Mathematical Skills: ability to perform and complete basic construction calculations, take measurements, etc.
- Organization and Planning: ability to look ahead and keep the jobsite clean, organized, and safe.
- Problem Solving: adaptable and able to problem solve through analysis.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
- Hearing adequate to perform job duties in person.
- Able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone.
- Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties and respond to dangerous situations.
- Frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, squatting, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
- Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard and other electronic devices. Repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- May work in areas where hazardous substances are present.
- Must be willing and able to operate a company vehicle.
- Able to safely ascend and descend ladders, stairs, ramps, and scaffolds.
- Able to work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
- Able to position one-self in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, and tunnels.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the shift.
- Able to work in the sun, heat, wet, dry, dirty, and dusty conditions.
Salary:
- $27.00/hour - $36.00/hour
