Summary: Laborers work in the construction and/or maintenance of streets, roadways, drainage systems, utility lines, buildings, and other public facilities. The duties they perform require the use of power tools and mechanical equipment, which require set up, adjustment, and operational knowledge, skills, and physical abilities used in digging, excavating, cutting, and repair work. Skills Laborers may operate trucks and other equipment for transporting personnel and tools to and from work sites, and in loading, unloading and moving materials. Incumbents work is assigned and carried out according to oral and written instructions, and supervisors provide additional instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Assists skilled craftsmen (e.g., plumbers, carpenters, painters, electricians, etc.) with necessary repairs to County/City facilities, responds to emergency calls, and other miscellaneous duties as needed.
- Conducts necessary equipment maintenance tasks including loading, cleaning, fueling and repairing all equipment, supplies, and tools to ensure proper storage, safety and efficiency.
- Conducts necessary and assigned maintenance functions for streets and sidewalks including patching potholes, repairing utility cuts, repairing damaged sidewalks, concrete work, etc.
- Performs proper preparatory tasks including gathering all necessary tools and materials, conducting pre-trip inspections on all equipment to be used, loading and unloading equipment and materials, etc. Maintains and improves public parks, rights-of-way and planting areas by mowing grass, landscaping, removing debris, trash collection, and cleaning and repairing city or county owned structures.
- Conducts necessary and assigned maintenance functions for sewer lines, storm drains, culverts, etc. including assisting with laying pipes, digging trenches, clearing storm drains, repairing culverts and headwalls, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Driver's license.
- Experience performing one or more of the following: using measuring equipment (e.g., tape measure, level); using hand tools (e.g., screwdriver, hammer, saw, rake, shovel); using gas powered equipment (e.g., weed eater, mower, chainsaw, compactor); mixing concrete.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes. None. CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
- Knowledge of hand tools, including their designs and uses.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs and uses.
- Knowledge of power tools, including their designs and uses.
- Knowledge of safety procedures when working in and around traffic.
- Knowledge of safety procedures when working in and around traffic.
- Knowledge of the proper type of fuel (e.g., diesel, unleaded, propane, fuel/oil mix, etc.) needed for various equipment.
- Knowledge of the safety procedures for operating landscaping equipment and tools and while performing landscape care and maintenance to prevent injury to self and others.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways and construction sites. Work may also involve the use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. Workers may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Job may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
