Laborer - Public WorksGeneral Definition/Conditions of Work:This is a non-skilled position assisting in the maintenance and construction of city owned streets, buildings and grounds and use of related vehicles and equipment. May be assigned to any of the divisions of the Public Works. Works under the supervisory control of the designated supervisor of the department to which the individual is assigned. Work is reviewed for quality and timeliness of completed tasks.This is heavy work (40+ pounds) requiring the frequent exertion of 25 pounds of force, occasional exertion of 50 pounds of force and the infrequent requirement to lift 75-pound loads. Work requires above average physical agility and dexterity. Normal safety precautions are required, and the individual will be required to wear some protective clothing and equipment such as rain and snow gear, boots, goggles/safety glasses, respirators, traffic vests, hard hats, boots, gloves and the like. Work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven terrain or surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, crouching and reaching. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions involving moderate risks, discomfort or unpleasantness such as a high level of noise, dust, mud, grease, odor, moving vehicles or machines; cold, hot and/or wet weather.Essential Functions/Responsibilities:Engages in a wide variety of tasks such as assisting in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and sidewalks, storm sewers, culverts and catch basins, curb and gutter, buildings and grounds, cleaning roadside ditches, mowing and related tasks.Assists with snow removal and traffic control operations.Performs other related duties as required.Nothing contained herein shall be deemed to limit the duties of the position to the examples contained herein and it is expressly understood that the duties of this position may include other related duties not describe herein.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Basic knowledge of the material used in construction, maintenance and repair activities as related to assigned areas.Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety policies and practices applicable to work being done.Good knowledge of the care and utilization of materials and equipment used.Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors and the general public.Education and Experience:High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.Licenses/Certificates or Other Requirements:Valid Driver's License with valid Commercial Driver's License preferredVDOT certification in Work Zone Traffic Control preferred
