Employment OpportunitiesThis is an entry-level manual labor position requiring limited skill or experience. Employees in this position will be assigned work in the Department of Public Works, which may include trash pickup and removal, and street, sidewalk, park, and/or building maintenance. Work isperformed under the direct supervision of the Department Supervisor but may take direction from the Driver or Crew Leader. Laborers may be assigned to assist in other departments as needed or to cross-train.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSIt is an essential function that the employee comes to work each day as scheduled, on time, maintains a good attendance record, and works as directed by the supervisor.Lift and load trashcans, recyclables, and bulk items onto trash trucks.Clean around and empty city trash receptacles.Mow grass on city rights-of-ways.Remove snow and ice from city property using shovels and trucks.Trim trees and shrubs and remove or chip debris.Weed, mulch, and water flowerbeds and shrubs.Install and maintain City signs.Maintain city streets and sidewalks including breaking up and removing old pavement, street painting, filling potholes, and repairing roadways and sidewalks.Blow, rake, collect, and remove leaves from city property.Make minor or routine repairs to division maintenance equipment and/or tools.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESAbility to perform routine manual labor.Ability to safely use tools such as mowers, rakes, shovels, jackhammers, weed whackers, and chainsaws as requested.Ability to maintain a harmonious and effective working relationship with supervisors, subordinates, public officials, and the public/residents of City.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTWork requires safely operating several potentially hazardous tools such as chain saws, compressors, and mowers; working in and around traffic; working around trucks and hydraulics; working in inclement weather; and walking, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 50 pounds.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEmployees must be able to perform heavy manual labor.Limited education is acceptable, but you must be able to read instructions and write minor repair requests.Prior work experience is preferred but not required.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION:CDL is not required but preferred.May be required to drive City vehicles in the performance of his job and a valid driver's license is required with a good driving record.The City of Hyattsville is an Equal Opportunity Employer without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, disability, political or union affiliation.How to ApplyApplicants are required to complete and submit a City of Hyattsville employment application, which is available online at /jobs.
