The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Lactation Clinical Coordinator to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager.Position Summary:To assist in the development and supervision of the lactation program, including supervision of the lactation consultants, and of clinical services for patients and clients who are lactating in Labor and Delivery, Mother-Baby, NICU, Family Medicine, and the Women's Health clinics.Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job TasksProvide Leadership and Oversight for Specialized Services or Populations: Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, and other health professionals in planning, delivering and evaluating care for specific patient populations. Lead nursing personnel in providing specialized patient procedures. Participate in patient management to facilitate treatment plan over entire course of treatment/care setting. • Provides leadership for direct patient care programs while collaborating with unit-based nurse management team(s).* Participates in decision-making process for financial management, operational budgetary decisions and cost containment strategies.* Participates in/provides leadership for divisional, departmental and /or intra-institutional and community committees and projects.* Participates in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards in order to meet state and national agency accreditation.* Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned.* Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.* Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.* Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.* Promotes a positive work environment.* Demonstrates the ICARE Core Values of service leadership: respect, communication, accountability, integrity, and compassion.* Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.Specialized Services for Nursing Care: Apply expertise in specialized field of nursing to lead efforts to improve nursing quality and other services that support the practice of nursing. Lead or participate in evidence-based projects within specialty area and collaborate with the appropriate CPL or NPL staff member to implement practice changes. • Collaborates with nursing, medical staff, and other health professionals in the development and review of standards in planning, delivering and evaluating care for specific patient population.* Provides direct patient care. Participates in patient management to facilitate treatment plan over entire course of treatment/care setting. Follows universal precautions.* Independently coordinates and facilitates patient care between multiple disciplines within both the confines of UIHC and the local communities (including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services). Facilitates continuity of care.* Coordinates patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit and possible admission, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow up visit appointment, provides medication, rehab teaching, etc* Serves as a clinical resource or consultant for specific patient population.* Participates in development and implementation of managed care programs for the specific patient population.* Communicates with physicians and members of the health care team directing patient care.* Manages and supports Telephone Triage.Provide Education: Provide specialized health education to patients and health profession students and residents applicable to patients in field of expertise. Communicate detailed, complex medical/dental information to a variety of audiences. • Designs and implement patient/family health education activities for the specific patient population recognizing individualized need.* Serves as an educational and clinical resource to patients, families and staff (supports patient/family/staff educational activities).* Provides specialized health education to patients and health profession students and residents applicable to patients in area of responsibility.* Supports implementation and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs, coordinating and presenting those related to specific area of practice.* Facilitates the educational experience for health care students and monitors the care delivered.* Communicates detailed, complex medical information to a variety of audiences.Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education: Follow and apply policies and meet documentation requirements. Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives. Report variances and work to address them. Recommend policies and/or procedures enhancements that address new and improved care processes. • Incorporates the role of patient care provider, advocate (patient, family, and health care professional), consultant, educator, researcher and quality manager.* Follows and applies policies and meet documentation requirements. Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives. Reports variances and work to address them. Recommends policies and/or procedures enhancements that address new and improved care processes.* Participates in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement program using appropriate risk and quality management data.* Uses relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems related to the specific patient population.* Participates in development and conduct research activities related to specialty area.* Applies expertise to lead efforts to improve nursing quality and other services that support the practice of nursing.* Leads or participates in evidence-based projects and collaborates with the appropriate CPL or NPL staff member to implement practice changes.Human Resource Management: Provide direction, assignments, evaluative feedback, coaching and counseling to staff, students and residents to assure outcomes are achieved. May hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff and assure compliance with UI policies and procedures. • Manages the talents, strengths and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group and provides each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit.* Actively seeks participation from staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities: provides staff recognition for contributions toward achievement of service excellence.* Demonstrates commitment to people; coaches staff to participate in team decision-making.* Develops and implements succession planning.* Assures performance expectations are clearly understood.* Holds staff accountable to meet or exceed patient needs/expectations as well as maintain standards of collaboration and respect within and among multidisciplinary teams.* Completes staff evaluations on time with written, solid justification.* Reviews attendance data, recognizes trends and takes appropriate follow-up with staff.* Knowledgeable of University of Iowa policies and Federal laws regarding leave and accommodation processes.* Adheres to all UIHC, UI Health Care and University of Iowa processes and procedures related to human resources.* Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.* Ensures that all employees are treated with respect and in a manner consistent with University policies related to equal employment opportunity and diversity.* Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations.* Facilitates monthly meetings of Nursing Shared Governance STAR champions.
