Position Overview:The Landfill Engineer is responsible for designing, constructing, monitoring, and managing landfill systems to ensure proper waste containment, minimal environmental impact, and compliance with strict regulatory standards. The role focuses on managing key systems such as leachate collection, landfill gas capture, and ensuring proper site operations to protect groundwater and air quality. The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental engineering, waste management, and landfill design.
Key Responsibilities:Site Selection and Assessment:
- Evaluate potential landfill locations by considering critical factors like geology, hydrology, and environmental impact.
- Conduct site assessments and environmental studies to determine the suitability of locations for landfill development.
- Assess risks and prepare environmental impact reports, ensuring the selected site meets local, state, and federal standards.
Design and Engineering:
- Develop detailed design plans for landfill systems, including liner systems, leachate collection and treatment systems, gas collection systems, and stormwater management.
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate landfill design into broader waste management strategies.
- Ensure all designs align with regulatory guidelines, sustainability practices, and cost-efficiency objectives.
Construction Oversight:
- Supervise the construction of landfill sites, ensuring that designs are implemented correctly and efficiently.
- Oversee the installation of critical infrastructure such as liners, drainage systems, and gas capture systems.
- Manage contractors and site personnel to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards during construction.
Operational Monitoring:
- Continuously monitor landfill performance through the analysis and sampling of leachate, gas, and other environmental parameters.
- Make adjustments to landfill operations as necessary, ensuring the system is functioning optimally to protect surrounding ecosystems.
- Regularly review data and collaborate with environmental scientists to assess trends and identify potential issues.
Gas Management:
- Design, implement, and manage systems for capturing and treating landfill gas, including methane and other hazardous gases.
- Develop strategies to utilize landfill gas as a renewable energy source, minimizing environmental impact and creating potential for energy recovery.
- Monitor gas generation and performance, making operational adjustments to optimize gas collection and minimize emissions.
Closure Planning:
- Develop comprehensive closure plans for landfills, including capping and monitoring strategies post-closure.
- Plan for long-term site management to ensure continued environmental protection after the landfill ceases operation.
- Coordinate post-closure monitoring and maintenance efforts to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure that all landfill operations, designs, and monitoring activities comply with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental laws, standards, and best practices.
- Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies, ensuring full transparency and compliance with environmental laws.
Stakeholder Communication:
- Act as the primary point of contact for local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders regarding landfill operations and environmental impact.
- Provide technical expertise and updates to ensure that stakeholders are informed about landfill activities and safety measures.
- Engage with regulatory bodies to address concerns and remain proactive in compliance matters.
Qualifications:- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in landfill engineering, waste management, or environmental consulting.
- Proven experience with landfill design, construction, gas management, and leachate collection systems.
- Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of landfill design, environmental monitoring, and waste management systems.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding landfill operations.
- Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, GIS, etc.) and environmental modeling tools.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
- Certifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Additional certifications in landfill management, environmental compliance, or sustainability are a plus.
