Performs facility and equipment maintenance work. Work involves performing general maintenance to landfill grounds, operating and maintaining grounds maintenance equipment, and maintaining leachate building and monitoring pump operations.Working Conditions/Requirements:This position works Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and every 4th Saturday 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. The assigned shift start time will depend on the department needs.This position works with Department of Correction inmates who are eligible for the work release program. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat/cold.Requires physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or digging.Requires a valid State of Alabama driver's license and reliable transportation to/from work. Major Duties Maintains landfill grounds.Completes required daily equipment inspections.Operates a bush hog, mowers, weed eaters, and other grounds maintenance equipment.Maintains leachate building and monitors pump operations.Maintains and repairs tools and equipment.Operates a variety of hand and power tools.Reports all needed repairs and safety concerns to the supervisor.Directs traffic within the landfill and in the disposal site.Works with Department of Correction inmates who are eligible for the work release program.Performs related duties. Minimum Qualifications Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Knowledge of relevant environmental rules and regulations.Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.Knowledge of the principles and practices of landfill operation.Knowledge of grounds equipment operation and maintenance principles.Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.Skill in the operation of landfill equipment.Skill in oral and written communication. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals.
