Salary : $38,480.00 Annually Location : 140 County Landfill Road - Palatka, FL Job Type: Full-time Job Number: 24-030 Department: Sanitation Opening Date: 05/22/2024 General Description This full-time, hourly position that reports to the Senior Division Manager. The position performs work which is skilled work in the operation of the heavy motor-driven earth-moving equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of very heavy construction equipment. Work in this position requires skill in working to engineering grades, in operating very heavy equipment, in working efficiently so as not to impede the progress of related operations, and in operating in close proximity to the public, as well as frequently interacting with the public. Essential Job Functions
  • Performs daily inspections of and operates leachate pumping systems.
  • Monitors and maintains adequate liquid levels in leachate tanks for hauling.
  • May perform general maintenance of all aspects of landfill operations.
  • May operate and maintain mining equipment to include Bulldozers, Excavators, ADT's, and Trommel Screens.
  • Coordinates daily operations with Senior Division Manager.
  • Maintains adequate inventories of supplies to ensure that operational downtime is limited.
  • Uses maintenance system to track service intervals to ensure that equipment services are on time.
  • Maintains and inspects Pre Crusher Compactor to ensure downtime is limited.
  • Performs daily inspections of all equipment and helps with general maintenance.
  • Inspects and performs basic maintenance of the tire grinder machine.

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, limitations and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.
  • Ability to make general repairs of motor driven equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate accident reports and other reports.
  • Ability to prepare simple reports.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and complex recycling equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of complex construction equipment.
  • Ability to give directions to the public at the landfill and recycling centers.
  • Knowledge of landfill operations including safety, cover requirements, compaction techniques, storm water control, litter control, and environmental protection methods and procedures. (These skills can be learned on the job)
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Completion of the eighth grade.
  • Considerable experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy construction and automotive equipment.
  • Final decision of appointment to this job will be based on applicant's ability to physically operate, drive and perform the illustrated tasks described herein.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in Class I, Class III, or Construction and Demolition Debris landfills is preferred.
  • LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Possession of a valid certificate for Trained Sanitary Landfill Operator within one year of date of hire.

  • Heavy (50 pounds or more) lifting and carrying.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
