Job Description:
Under the general supervision of an Assistant Superintendent of Parks, and close supervision of the Landscape Construction Specialist (or other higher classified employees), the Landscape Construction Worker ensures that Park assets are kept clean, in good repair, and secure. The Landscape Construction Worker may coordinate with outside contractors or other City divisions or departments to provide routine and non-routine constructions, maintenance, and repairs of Park assets such as playground equipment, indoor and outdoor furniture, and other property structures. When not performing rough or finish carpentry, the Landscape Construction Worker performs general maintenance, paints, maintains tools and equipment, performs custodial duties, and a wide variety of manual tasks in the maintenance and cleaning of City parks, fields and other property owned by the City. Duties may also include sweeping, cutting grass and brush, shoveling snow, emptying trash barrels, erecting signs in the parks, and participating in the City's snow removal operation during regular working hours, and during times of weather or service-related emergencies. A Landscape Construction Laborer performs related duties as required and must possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License and a Hoisting Engineer License within one year of date of hire.General Responsibilities: A Laborer performs the following, but is not limited to:Assesses non-routine maintenance or repair problems, notifies the Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent, and helps coordinate with outside contractors if necessary.Performs manual tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing floors and walls of Park Buildings; cleaning plumbing fixtures and washrooms; moving furniture and other equipment; cleaning sidewalks and performing lawn and gardening maintenance; providing for minor repairs to buildings and equipment; painting; washing windows; changing light bulbs; and maintaining general watch over Parks and Park infrastructure including buildings and other structures/assets.Builds, maintains, and repairs structures, park benches, tables and other wooden structures or fixtures.Sharpens and repairs tools and keeps equipment in good condition.Operates specialized tools such as drill presses, band saws, skill saws, jointers, lathes, circular saws, sanding machines.Assists in ordering and inventorying supplies and materials for jobs.Makes rough sketches and designs for carpentry work to be done.Cuts grass, rakes fields, weed whacking.Empties trash barrels and picks up debris in parks.Maintains athletic fields, paints field lines, opens and closes lights, unlocks gates, replaces basketball nets, and pumps fields after inclement weather.Performs work for all areas of cultivation including but not limited to, aeration, seeding, fertilization, top dressing, raking, thatching.Removes snow from streets and sidewalks in front of public buildings and parks manually or with trucks and other equipment, sanding or salting icy pavements manually or with equipment.Provides general maintenance of City property.Paints and erects signs in the parks.May be assigned to any area/division of the Department of Public Works on an acting or emergency basis as needed.Responds to weather or service-related emergencies outside of regular working hours.Performs related duties as required.Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, and SkillsKnowledge and experience in the techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in carpentry.Knowledge of the modern methods, tools and equipment used in building maintenance.Ability to work from sketches or blueprints.Ability to make rough sketches and designs.Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety measures, and precautions.Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the trade including power tools.Ability to work both independently without direct supervision, and as a part of a team.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to keep routine records.Ability to perform unskilled and semiskilled manual tasks.Physical Requirements: Must be possess the following to perform demanding physical tasks:Ability to perform light and heavy manual labor.Ability to walk, climb stairs, descend stairs for extended periods of time.Ability to climb and descend ladders.Ability to work in tight confined space.Sufficient strength and dexterity to use shovels, pry bars, sledgehammers, jackhammers, and wrenches.Ability to lift and move 40-50 lb. objects.Ability to set up and take down equipment, traffic signs, barricades, and other City property.Minimum QualificationsEducation equivalent to completion of high school, or 3 to 5 years of experience in landscaping, carpentry, or construction trades.Preference will be given to candidates who possess professional licenses in other trades such as electrical or plumbing.Must be available for extensive overtime during all types of emergencies.Must be able to understand oral and written instructions.Must be in possession of, or obtain within one year of date of hire, a Class B Commercial Driver's License (with air-brake endorsement), a Hoisting Engineers License, and a Rhode Island DEM Pesticide License.Selected candidate must successfully pass a physical/drug screening.Selected candidate must provide a Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) background check.Examination Weight100% Oral
