This role requires strong leadership, excellent organizational skills, and a deep understanding of horticulture to ensure the creation and upkeep of beautiful, functional outdoor spaces, especially Streetscape. Examples of DutiesEssential Functions of Work
- Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides to destroy undesirable growth and pests using spray wand and solution tank, and records chemicals used; tours grounds, inspects, and submits as needed soil and plant samples to ascertain work in progress, identify problem areas, and formulate course of action; selects, handles, mixes and applies fertilizers and mulches
- Operates large area mowers, truck with trailer, tractors, backhoe with loader bucket, zero turn mowers, trimmers, push mowers, hedge shear, chain saw/pole saw
- Select appropriate plants, materials, and features based on site conditions
- Ensure designs are sustainable and environmentally friendly
- Assists the Assistant Grounds Superintendent/Arborist with planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments, and scheduling of tasks
- Supervises Field and Landscape Operator(s)staff; (makes work assignments, recommends discipline, oversees work)
- Monitor the health and appearance of plants and turf, taking corrective actions as needed.
- Trains staff in proper methods and procedures; oversees projects as assigned
- Performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs to trucks, mowers and other heavy equipment (e.g. lubrications, changes tires/belts, sharpens mower blades, etc.); repairs/services hand tools, chainsaws, etc.
- Keeps records of all maintenance performed; provides regular updates and reports on projects
- Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties
- Participates in staff development activities and services, review procedures; attends staff meetings and industry related conferences, as directed
- Maintains required licenses and/or certificates
- Responsible for marking OUPS tickets for Streetscape
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERP/OSHA safety standards that pertain to the position
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
- Performs other duties as assigned
Typical QualificationsMinimum QualificationsEducation
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent
- Minimum three (3) years professional experience in grounds, landscape, and/or facilities maintenance, or related field
- Preference given to those with an Associate's Degree or higher with a concentration in General Plant Science or similar
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License CDL (Class B) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment
- Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license with good record
- Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, Category 5-Industrial Vegetation Control and Category 6a-Ornamental Pest Control or be able to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment
- Pass drug screen and physical prior to employment
