Position Type: Other SupportDate Posted: 9/16/2024Location: Ottawa Area Center (OAC)Date Available: ASAPJOB TITLE: Full Time Language Facilitator (American Sign Language) CLASSIFICATION: Hourly LOCATION: OAISD's Ottawa Area Center - Allendale, MI GENERAL JOB FUNCTION: The Language Facilitator's primary role is to facilitate communication between D/HH students and their classroom teachers, administrators, peers and other school personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in American Sign Language 2. Ability to support students from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultural and ethnic groups 3. Maintain standards of confidentiality 4. No physical or mental restrictions that would, with reasonable accommodation, prevent performance of the essential job functions and responsibilities 5. Ability to read and comprehend written program plans, instructions and other classroom essentials 6. Strong organizational skills PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Previous experience as a Language Facilitator 2. Previous experience working with students who have language deprivation 3. Effective interpersonal skills in both written and receptive/expressive communication 4. Work independently and productively and willing to accept supervision and constructive feedback ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Supports students who are D/HH with understanding of all auditory and visual information within the educational setting and facilitates communication between student and their classroom teachers, administrators, peers and other school personnel 2. Collaborates with the teacher(s) and other school personnel to ensure the needs of the student are being met 3. Monitors students comprehension and provides instructional and/or behavioral reinforcement as needed, under the direction of the teacher(s) 4. Introduces and explains vocabulary, repeats and reinforces classroom instruction, fosters appropriate classroom communication strategies and student self-advocacy skills 6. Assists teachers and administration with duties that contribute to the enhancement of the classroom environment while not interfering with the primary duty of language facilitation NOTABLE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Standing/Walking up to 6 hours per day 2. Sitting up to 3 hours per day 3. Lifting up to 35 pounds 2 to 3 times per hour for 7 hours 4. Fine motor skills required to do things such as write, pick up small objects, assist student with buckles and snaps 5. Gross motor skills required to do things such as shift weight from foot to foot while balancing a load with hands and arms, lift large objects, and lift limbs of student TYPICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT: Most work is accomplished in a classroom environment, at community sites or in a community based instructional site EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by administration CREDENTIALS, SPECIAL SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS POSITION: American Sign Language proficiency. Interpersonal Skills - Strong interpersonal skills are vital to ensure effective relationships with the teacher, other team members and parents and students WORK LOCATION(S): Work may be performed in any centralized special education classroom, at community-based instructional sites, or at community job placement sites TRAVEL/OVERTIME EXPECTATIONS: Travel may be periodically necessary to and from instructional sites or to meetings or conferences in the area. COMPENSATION: $20.27 per hour starting wage for less experienced candidates. Up to $26.70 per hour for very well qualified and school CALENDAR & HOURS: Thirty-five (35) hours per week. 190 days per year on year-round school calendar.
