As the Assistant Head Nurse, she/he has the authority and responsibility of managing the unit to provide care for every patient assigned to the unit and is held accountable for the use of the nursing process. She/he is responsible for the implementation/management of the Nursing Department Philosophy and objectives of the patient care unit.Examples Of Typical Tasks
  • Assess each patient's needs and establish an appropriate plan of care based on the nursing assessment and diagnosis.
  • Maintains standard of care by ensuring that an individualized care plan for each patient is developed and implemented.
  • Evaluate the nursing care Plan and the patient's response to the intervention and make modifications as needed.
  • Prepares patient care assignments based on staff competence and patient acuity.
  • Administers medications and treatments in a safe knowledgeable manner and documents same according to hospital policy, procedure, and professional standards.
  • Ensures that medications are accurately documented in the HDS System once removed from Pyxis and resolves all discrepancies if created.
  • Supervises the performance of nursing personnel.
  • Makes daily rounds to check for completion/accuracy in the electronic/paper medical records (i.e., medication, progress notes, doctor's order, Patient Care Plans, 1-2-6 Cart and emergency equipment, Patient Assessment sheets Patient/Family education, etc.)
  • Makes daily rounds with the interdisciplinary Team in developing priorities of patient care.
  • Participates and assists in the implementation of unit orientation of new employees.
  • Communicates effectively with the patient/family, medical, nursing, and other staff.
  • Utilizes Nursing Care Plans as a guide for rounds, conferences, and assignments.
  • Review Patient Educational and Care Plans for patient-specific plans of care.
  • Monitor staff for compliance with the prevention of HAPI and restraint application, turning and repositioning every 2 Hours.
  • Responsible for reporting to the Supervisor any situation or problem on the service which impedes the nurse in the performance of their duties.
  • Conducts daily audits of paper/electronic medical records to ensure that progress notes reflect nursing and surgical plans of care.
  • Assessment and completion of weekly patient risk assessment records and pressure ulcer reports.
  • Directs and coordinates the Continuous Quality Improvement monitoring activities.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
  • Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
