DescriptionJob DescriptionPOSITION: Laundry AideREPORTS TO: Director of FacilitiesDEPARTMENT: LaundryEXEMPT/ NONEXEMPT: Non-ExemptREVISED: September 2014 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Maintain clean clothing and linens for our residents. Duties performed in the laundry and other areas of the nursing home. Follow policies and procedures of department with regard to duties. Reports to department supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sorts soiled laundry according to facility policy and procedures.
- Loads and unloads washers and dryers.
- Sorts, folds, stack clean linen.
- Washes, dries, sorts and delivers residents personal laundry.
- Possesses knowledge of equipment and procedures for washing linens of various degrees of soil.
- Understands the functions of various soaps, bleaches, softeners, and other chemicals used in washing and rinsing.
- Distinguishes between cotton and synthetic fibers.
- Performs daily tasks in accordance with infection control and universal precaution policies and procedures.
- Respects confidentiality and resident's rights.
- Respects and shows kindness to residents.
- Assures that floors are free of hazardous debris
- Practices good body mechanics in regards to lifting.
- Protects and maintains work areas in accordance with facility safety policies.
- Follows dress code according to department policy.
- Maintains work area in clean and orderly manner.
NON- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Occasionally orients new employees.
- Performs periodic cleaning tasks as directed by department supervisor.
- May be asked to perform housekeeping duties.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to read, write, speak and follow oral and written directions in English.
- Applicant should be at least 18 years of age.
ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW, AND APPROVAL OF WORK:
- The laundry personnel are directly supervised by the head of housekeeping department.
RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY
- Shows initiative and judgment to estimate amount of laundry for machines and degree of soil.
- Performs repetitive tasks which sometimes involve unpleasant conditions.
- Demonstrates ability to organize time.
- Evaluates work load.
- Sets priorities.
- Supervisor will assign days that need to be filled for vacations and call offs.
REPORT PREPARATION
- Completes incident reports.
- Submits repairs of laundry equipment to housekeeping supervisor orally.
- Prepares and sends repair requests to maintenance supervisor in absence of housekeeping supervisor.
EQUPIMENT OPERATION
- Operates washers and dryers.
RELATIONS WITH OTHERS
- Must maintain cordial relations with residents, families, visitors and others.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and maintain cooperative spirit with staff.
SPECIFICATIONS - MENTAL/PHYSICAL
- Stands and walks throughout the day on hard surfaces.
- Turns, bends and kneels daily.
- Pushes laundry carts weighting up to 100 lbs. on a daily basis.
- Lifts 75-100 lbs. on a daily basis.
- Possesses good finger and hand dexterity.
- Possesses visual acuity to identify stains and soil.
- Sorts by color.
- Works indoors in a lighted, ventilated, and heated building.
- Tolerates odors coming from residents and soiled linen on a daily basis.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Experience
- High School Graduate preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENTIndoors - Works in well lighted and ventilated areas. Subject to possible falls, odors, and injuries from equipment. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, chemicals, and various viruses, including Hepatitis B and AIDS.Outdoors - Possible exposure to weather extremes.This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
