Job Description:

The Law Library Director and Librarian is responsible for overall leadership of the Law Library. The Director delegates responsibility to three (3) full-time and one (1) classified staff. In accordance with the University structure, the Director reports directly to the WVU College of Law Dean and is part of the University Libraries system. The Director will also have a faculty appointment in the College. The nature of the faculty appointment, rank, and compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experiences.

The Director's major areas of responsibility are (1) internal and external communications with law library constituents; (2) strategic planning; (3) leadership and oversight of the staff; (4) development of the collection and information resources (5) oversight of library services to faculty, students and the public; (6) assistance to and cooperation with other College units, such as student services, development, career services, alumni relations and the West Virginia Law Review; (7) develops and administers a legal research curriculum of both introductory and advanced courses; (8) and personal research and scholarly writing.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Administration and Management

* Demonstrate leadership within the organization: provide a vision, take initiative, solve problems, impact change and encourage the development of other staff through a positive and encouraging work environment.

* Develop, implement, modify, and enforce library policies, procedures, and services to serve the needs of the library's varied patron groups while balancing the immediate and future goals of the library.

* Develop and implement strategic initiatives in alignment with and in support of the College strategic plan.

* Identify emerging trends and technologies in academic law libraries and utilize assessment techniques and analyze data impacting effectiveness and efficiency of the library's operation.

* Manage the library budget to support strategic initiatives.

* Direct and coordinate activities for which responsibility is delegated to further reach strategic goals.

* Serve on committees, as necessary.

Faculty, Student, and Curriculum Support

* Support and promote faculty scholarship, development, and teaching.

* Solicit and work with faculty and student recommendations in the selection of materials, databases, and library applications.

* Work with faculty and librarians to select, review, and evaluate library material/resources in conjunction with the Collection Development Plan and the current College curriculum.

* Plan, create, and conduct training sessions or other programming on library materials/resources in support of College curriculum.

Personnel Management

* Recommend and administer personnel policies.

* Recruit, hire, evaluate, promote, and terminate staff according to University policies.

* Define expectations for staff performance and set goals for service and programming.

* Work to promote positive staff morale.

* Lead planning for optimum utilization of personnel skills, abilities, talents, and interests.

* Provide opportunities for professional development.

* Encourage staff to actively participate in professional associations, workshops, seminars, and activities.

* Serve as a positive role model to staff on professionalism, professional ethics, and professional knowledge.

Professional Development

* Attend professional meetings to maintain network with other professional library-related agencies.

* Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance leadership skills and maintain an awareness of new trends and developments in the law library field.

* If required for appointment and rank, conduct research and engage in scholarly writing.

Communications

* Serve as the official representative of the law library.

* Recommend and administer communications initiatives internal and external to the College.

* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies.

* Develop and implement outreach initiatives for the law library.

Education

* J.D. degree from an ABA accredited school.

* Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited school.

Experience

* A minimum of five (5) years of Law Library leadership.
