Our Floor Care Custodian team is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the floors in King County buildings and any other place where applicable. We are looking for a reliable floor care expert with the ability to inspire and mentor a team. Qualified applicants must have prior floor care experience.
  • Location: King County Buildings and other applicable locations.
  • Shift/Schedule: Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 11:30PM
  • Final candidate(s) must be able to pass a thorough fingerprint-based background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and reference checks.

Job DutiesJob Summary: As the Lead Custodian for the Floor Care team, you will be responsible for overseeing the cleanliness and maintenance of floors across various King County buildings. You will lead a team of custodians, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure that all floor care tasks are performed to the highest standards. This role requires a combination of hands-on floor care expertise and strong leadership abilities to inspire and manage your team effectively. The successful candidate at a minimum will demonstrate skill and ability to:
  • Prioritize, schedule, assign, and oversee the work of custodians and floor care staff; oversee and evaluate their work; monitor their work in progress.
  • Train custodians and floor care crew, and perform administrative duties.
  • Follow-up with Supervisor on the work performed by custodians and floor care to evaluate performance and resolve issues.
  • Prioritize emergency tasks in the absence of on-site supervision; respond to emergency calls as necessary.
  • Review, assign and follow-up on maintenance work orders; including timesheet review and completion of other necessary paperwork.
  • Provide input to supervisors in preparing performance feedback and in coaching custodians and floor care staff for improved performance; may investigate and address performance and conduct issues in a timely and appropriate manner and may participate in discussions regarding disciplinary actions with higher level supervisors.
  • Perform duties of custodian and custodian floor care classifications as assigned including: Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions.
  • Maintain and restore hard floors, carpeted floors, and/or upholstered surfaces using floor care equipment, including shop vacuums, scrapers, motorized burnishes, scrubbers, manual and electrical hand tools, and various extraction machines.
  • Remove and apply floor coatings or finishes. Clean, remove stains, and extract soil from carpets.
  • Adjust or re-arrange furniture as needed to complete projects.
  • Clean assigned equipment and tools.
  • Prepare floors for maintenance or restoration by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and scrubbing.
  • Prepare and mix chemicals using established techniques and/or tools.
  • Follow project safety procedures, including the placement of cautionary signs.
  • Respond to facility emergencies and perform cleaning duties as required.
  • Safely operate equipment and County-owned vehicles.
  • Perform custodial cleaning tasks when assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, SkillsDesirable Skills:
  • Planning and Coordination: Ability to develop detailed work plans and schedules, and coordinate tasks effectively.
  • Relationship Management: Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse groups.
  • Communication: Strong ability to express and convey ideas clearly to various stakeholders within and outside King County.
  • Training and Development: Experience in providing training and mentorship to others.
  • Problem-solving: Proficiency in identifying issues and developing practical solutions.
  • Safety Practices: Knowledge of and ability to administer basic safety rules and ensure compliance with safety standards.

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
  • The reporting location for this position will be to a variety of King County Buildings and other applicable locations.
  • This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
  • The standard workweek is 40 hours.
  • The shift/schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 11:30PM.
  • This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 925.
  • Candidates must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon acceptable driving history and successfully passing the fingerprint based criminal history check and a pre-employment physical examination.
