GENERAL SUMMARY The Lead Custodian, under the general supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor, is responsible for custodial operations, functions, and activities on selected school or other district sites, and performs general cleaning and custodial functions as assigned. Supervises one or more custodians and ensures that scheduled work assignments are performed effectively, estimates quantity and types of materials and supplies needed in support of custodial team members, and performs other duties directly related to this job description. The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs and supervises required custodial services to maintain assigned building(s) or work areas in a clean, orderly and secure/safe manner; serves as the person responsible for the custodial operation of an assigned school or District facility including the planning and scheduling of work and custodial staff supervision. Performs all necessary custodial duties required in school buildings; scrubs, sweeps, mops and waxes floors, vacuums rugs and dusts, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork; polishes metal work; fills/instills paper and soap dispensers. Washes windows and walls, cleans restrooms and locker/shower facilities, scrubs toilets and other plumbing fixtures, cleans drinking fountains, rain gutter systems, and walkways. Moves, lifts, carries surplus food supplies weighing up to 50 pounds per package. Schedules workload and provides instruction/training of custodians assigned to the work site and monitors work to ensure satisfactory standards. Schedules alternative work plan(s) when short staffed. Inspects buildings and grounds for fire, sanitary and safety hazards; repairs or reports problems as necessary; sets security alarms; monitors emergency shut-off valves. Performs minor maintenance repairs on facilities to include but not limited to basic minor electrical, carpentry, and plumbing. Replace lights and remove graffiti; operates a variety of hand and power tools in the performance of assigned tasks. Assists in moving, arranging and setting up furniture and equipment for sporting or special events, activities and meetings. Provides on-site support and safe guarding as required of district facility request and campus activities. Responsible for the use, storage and proper disposal of chemicals, solvents, cleaning and compounds, polish and fluids, some of which may be considered toxic and require special handling. Ability to read, understand and follow material data sheets. Participates in emergency response activities as necessary. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation. Knowledge of proper school cleaning problems, methods, materials and equipment. Knowledge of fire, earthquake and evacuation procedures; locations of shutoffs. Skill in operating mechanical floor cleaners, scrubbers and polishers. Ability to make minor mechanical repairs and report problems that are not immediately repairable to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations. Skill in operating electric and/or hand tools for installation, repair, or replacement of equipment. Ability to follow and monitor health and safety requirements regarding proper work practices and procedures. Ability to: Lift/carry 104 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the time or 1-100 times per day); Lift/carry 60 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time or 100-500 times per day); Lift/carry 10 pounds constantly (67-100% of the time or over 500 times per day); Push a maximum force of 120.4 pounds on objects; Pull a maximum force of 123.5 pounds on objects. WORKING CONDITIONS Physical demands include lifting up to 60 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, bending at the waist, pushing, pulling, carrying, twisting/turning, climbing ladders, seeing to assure proper and complete cleaning, working overhead and above shoulder height for stocking, repair, and other tasks, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment. Moderate to high stress level. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work environment both indoors and outdoors, subject to variable hours. Temperature - usually normal climate, occasional adverse weather conditions. Chemical exposure - occasional; solvents, cleaning compounds, polish fumes. JOB PARTICULARS Tools/equipment/work aids - gloves, safety goggles, back support belt when lifting, respirator as necessary. CONTACTS Daily contact with students, custodial and District staff. Occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel. OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES Valid California driver's license. First Aid and CPR certification. Hazmat Insecticide Annual blood borne pathogen/Hep B training. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
