JOB SUMMARYThis position is responsible for supervising and participating in the repair and maintenance of the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure maintenance is performed on vehicles.
- Prepare schedules for vehicles that are due for service.
- Service vehicles.
- Assign work to employees.
- Perform work orders.
- Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
- Prioritizes work orders and delegates work assignments to Mechanics.
- Communicates with user departments to schedule maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Oversees the daily servicing of the city bus fleet.
- Oversees repairs of law enforcement vehicles.
- Prepares required reports.
- Monitors timekeeping by Mechanics to ensure accurate labor charges.
- Ensures the availability of parts and supplies for upcoming repair and maintenance activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years' experience in a related field of work.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B CDL driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina within six months of start date.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Equipment Lead Mechanic assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and division policies; equipment and vehicles repair manuals; personnel policy; and safety regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related supervisory and technical duties. The variety of vehicles and equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the position.SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the repair and maintenance of the City equipment and vehicle fleet. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe and operable fleet.PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the general public, and vendors.PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, garage, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
