Job Overview
Responsible for collecting and disposing of leaves during our loose-leaf season; responsible for working on a garbage, trash, or recycling crew as needed.
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. * Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as removing leaves and debris, trimming shrubbery, and clearing and landscaping grounds.
* Cleans out catch basins using shovels and pitchforks.
* Sweeps and cleans sidewalks and streets.
* Cleans buildings, washes floors and windows, and cleans/stocks restrooms.
* Cleans public grounds by picking up trash.
* Plants, waters, fertilizes, and trims trees and plant materials.
* Operates push mowers, trimmers, and other related tools/equipment.
* Assists in other departmental crews as needed.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
* High School diploma or GED.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
* Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions.
* Ability to operate the tools, machines, and equipment used in the leaf removal process.
* Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.
* Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for the operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, snow, ice, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, gases, oils, fuels, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts. Employees may be required to wear a respirator during the leaf collection season and could be reasonably anticipated, in performing his or her job duties, to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
