Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE The Legal Assistant 1 with Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) position is a full-time position performing legal clerical work and preparing documents for court and administrative proceedings. Work includes preparation of documents for juvenile dependency cases and Orphan's Court proceedings. SUPERVISION RECEIVED This position reports directly to the Managing Attorney. SUPERVISION EXERCISED This position does not exercise supervision over other functions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION Prepares documents for the agency's cases before the Pennsylvania Bureau of Hearings and Appeals, and updates/maintains the agency's internal schedule for BHA appeal hearings and filing deadlines. Reviews agency records and completes information forms requested by the Court for child custody cases. Ability to discuss child welfare dependency cases, custody cases, and Bureau of Hearings and Appeals cases with all levels of staff in order to prepare appropriate documents and schedule meetings. Assists the agency attorneys in acquiring/assembling documents in preparation for Court proceedings. At the request of the agency attorney, contacts supervisors and caseworkers to prepare legal documents. Consults with supervisors, casework staff, and attorneys to prepare testimony, witness sheets, and supportive evidence in a matter. Reviews weekly Custody Court dockets and prepares CYF case reports. Prepares all Child Protective Services cases scheduled for Bureau of Hearing and Appeal matters and assists agency attorneys and solicitors in appeal hearings. Tracks status of criminal charges on CPS cases. Assists agency solicitors in training of legal clerical staff as needed. Expresses ideas clearly, both orally and in writing. Sets priorities, plans and organizes work in consultation with and under direct supervision of immediate supervisor. Maintains a workable reference file and keeps legal files up-to-date. Knowledge of and ability to use a computer to prepare/correct reports, letters, interim court orders, case and court materials. Performs related tasks as required. *An employee assigned to this title shall perform a majority, but may not perform all, of the duties listed in this job description. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to communicate in English Ability to read and write sufficiently to understand regulations and written materials related to the job. Ability to use telephone and email to communicate. Ability to operate a computer. Ability to analyze and compute numbers and other data. Ability to read handwritten documents. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT Telephone, personal computer (including word processing and spreadsheet software), calculator, writing implements, fax machine, copy machine, and paper shredder. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
