Job Summary: This is a legal assistant position that will provide legal support to the Education Law Unit. The primary responsibility will be as an Intake Coordinator who will receive, screen, and triage initial intake calls, provide conflict checks, financial eligibility assessments, and prepare the application for review by the advocates. Responsibilities Include:

  • Cross-reference applicants to check for conflicts and obtain basic facts of an applicant's legal problem(s) or education law issue.
  • Collaborate with the Basic Needs Team to obtain other human services for clients.
  • Compile and report statistics to the Program Director.
  • Open intake files for all eligible and accepted clients each week, monitor files, and send follow-up correspondence.
  • Schedule appointments for clients to read and review all documents. Explain documents if applicable and have the client sign as required.
  • Conduct all client follow-up and evaluations, as requested.
  • Maintain efficient communication with clients by telephone, relay messages between clients and attorneys, and draft letters to clients.
  • Transcribe accurate and detailed notes of all client contacts, conversations with attorneys, and other third parties related to a client's case in our case management system.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with community agencies and attend related meetings.
  • Attend community education and training and assist with coordination as needed.
  • Maintain and assist with calendaring of school meetings and hearings.
  • Assist with school meetings, hearings, trial, and appeal preparation.
  • Conduct legal research as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Other Requirements:
  • This position requires the use of a variety of office equipment, filing, and mail handling.
  • The ability to travel to and from the office and other locations as needed is essential.
  • The intake Coordinator must maintain consistent communication with staff and clients, and exchange clear, accurate information about the results and outcomes of their work.
  • LASROC is a hybrid office, some work will be remote, however, staff are required to be in the office based on the needs of their unit.
Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or High School Diploma and 2 years of equivalent experience.
  • Notary Public License preferred; if not currently licensed, the selected candidate must be able to sit for and pass the notary exam within the first six months of employment.
  • Demonstrated respect and empathy when working with clients, ensuring a compassionate and understanding approach to their needs.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills, particularly in managing tasks and schedules for multiple attorneys simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage multiple responsibilities concurrently. High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partners.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote-work environment (familiarity with technologies involved in a virtual work environment including Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc. preferred).
