Individuals with a can- do attitude and who are multilingual are especially encouraged to apply. We are specifically looking for candidates with evening and Friday- Sunday availability but welcome all availability. The Happy Valley Library is the community living room. It serves more than 25,000 visitors and circulatesalmost 60,000 books each month, as part of the LINCC network of libraries. The library circulates more youth materials and foreign language items than any other branch in Clackamas County. GENERAL PURPOSEUnder close supervision, provides professional library services of a complex or technical nature; may oversee activities within a specific section or functional area. Interacts with internal customers, external customers.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Librarian I is distinguished from the Librarian II by performing professional library functions, requiring independent judgment and application of accepted, current library work methods, techniques, and professional standards under close supervision.The Librarian I provides services and programs designed to assist the general community with books, documents, pamphlets and other materials for reading, research, reference purposes or general recreation and information. The Librarian I will communicate effectively internally and with the public on a variety of City topics. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Classifies and catalogues the more difficult print and non-print materials using various reference sources, assigning subject headings, and determining the most accurate cross references and descriptive notes; makes changes or additions to existing classification scheme.
  • Performs difficult or technical reference and readers' advisory service
  • Performs on-line reference searches in state, national and commercial bibliographic databases.
  • May assist patrons in selection of books.
  • May act as the lead worker for a specific functional area overseeing the work of and providing assistance to other staff.
  • May have responsibility for training, assigning and scheduling work of certain staff.
  • Recommends library materials for purchases based on patrons' needs or individual requests.
  • Assists patrons in the use of library tools and services.
  • Develops programs and activities that inform the public concerning library services.
  • May develop and conduct library programs for groups of various ages or coordinate events and serve as a point of contact for performers.
  • May develop marketing messages and promotional materials for Library programs and services including newsletters, Facebook posts, etc.
  • Oversees the processing of materials for circulation.
  • Participates and serves on various committees; attends professional conferences and meetings; maintains statistical and other records; prepares monthly, annual or special reports as required.
  • Assist and support the City to identify and provide services to all members of the community and remove barriers to those services.
  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of librarianship including cataloguing, reference and bibliography.
  • Library facilities and services.
  • Library programs and their relationship to community needs.
  • Promotions and marketing.
  • Principles of library organization and administration.
  • Standard books, periodicals, reference, bibliographic works and their general contents.
  • concepts and techniques for prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Principles and techniques of leading assigned staff and training co-workers.
  • Office administrative practices and procedures, including recordkeeping and filing practices and procedures.
  • Principles and practices of sound business communication; proper English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to become knowledgeable concerning City organization, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Basic functions of public agencies, including the role and responsibilities of a public entity.
  • Computer equipment and uses of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, library database and other software.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and City staff, in person, in writing and over the telephone.
  • Regulations, statutes, procedures, and policies as applicable to assigned City operations, or ability to learn within a reasonable period of time.
Ability to:
  • Analyze a wide variety of problems related to library service and recommend effective actions.
  • Perform difficult reference or cataloging work.
  • Research and incorporate national trends or other library specialties; recommend books to fill the needs of the community serviced and of individual patrons.
  • Analyze statistical records and prepare reports

  • Effectively communicate accurate information both orally and in writing.
  • Interact tactfully and effectively with the public in stressful and potentially confrontational situations.

  • Operate a computer and library databases, word processing software and other standard office equipment.

  • Compose correspondence, prepare documents and make arrangements from brief instructions.

Training and Experience:A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; a master's degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) and one year of increasingly responsible library related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
  • A valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. Incumbent(s) must also possess and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout the course of employment.   • Requires Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Occasional travel to attend meetings, trainings, public presentations and pick up and deliver supplies.

  • This position requires mobility. Walking/moving about, standing for extended periods, squatting, bending, kneeling and occasional reaching (above and below shoulder height).
  • Occasionally lift and carry and heavy boxes of materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 70% of the work period while operating equipment such as computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Work schedule may include holiday, weekend and/or evening hours as early as 7:30 am and as late as 8:15 pm.
