Job Type Full-timeDescriptionUnder the supervision of the Head of Youth Services Librarian IV, helps coordinate library and literacy outreach to youth, parents, and other adults who work with youth; plans age-appropriate and interactive programming for youth in the library, in schools, and at community events; carries out the systematic collection development procedures for youth materials.SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services.SUPERVISION EXERCISED None.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (These tasks are illustrative only; to carry out the day-to-day functions of the job, other duties may be performed. - Plans and conducts off-site family programs and community outreach events.
- Plans and conducts programming for youth in the library, particularly in branches.
- Reviews statistics and feedback about youth and outreach programs and uses this to plan for future programs.
- Helps develop the Summer Reading Program and coordinates special events and speakers.
- Liaisons with educators and other community contacts to build partnerships and promote library initiatives and services.
- Evaluates present circulating collection for age, condition, and currency in assigned youth subject areas. Makes additions and deletions based on criteria from the Collection Development Policy in consultation with the Head of Youth Services.
- Selects materials for the collection in assigned areas.
- Oversees the smooth operation of the department including communications and changes of daily work schedule in the Head of Youth Services' absence.
- Maintains confidentiality of library patron records.
- Assists patrons by:
- Answering directional and procedural inquiries.
- Advising patrons concerning the library and its services, resources and policies.
- Giving instruction in the use of the online catalog, library resources and downloadables, and location of materials.
- Instructing in the operation of equipment.
- Answering reference and other information requests.
- Answering incoming calls; providing guidance and assistance, routing calls to appropriate personnel or department; taking messages.
- Performs supervisory related duties such as opening and closing procedures for the Main Library, securing money, setting alarms, and ensuring safety and security.
- May serve as the librarian in charge of the building on nights or weekends.
- Maintains professional development through various workshops, literature, and other means; consults and shares information with co-workers and other library workers.
- Able to assist in changes of daily work schedule due to unexpected public demands.
- Required to work nights and weekends as scheduled.
- May fill in other positions within the Library System.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
RequirementsEducation and Experience:
- Master's degree in library science from an accredited university and
- At least two (2) years of professional children's librarian experience preferred.
- At least two (2) years of experience with outreach preferred.
- One (1) year of experience working with creative technology hardware, software, and related tools in a library, lab, or educational setting preferred.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of standard library functions, practices, and procedures; ability to learn and adhere to our library policies and procedures; ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Knowledge of resources in field of youth services as well as general librarianship.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, employees, branch managers and system personnel; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work in a team environment as well as independent work.
- Ability to set priorities; ability to handle multiple projects at the same time on a deadline; ability to perform detailed and precise work.
- Excellent research, clerical and computer skills including internet search engines and databases.
- Knowledge of various computer software: word, excel and publisher to assist patrons and use for job reports and publicity.
- Knowledge of popular library materials, genres and formats, including downloadable materials. Familiarity with current trends in reading and book discovery.
- Excellent research, clerical and computer skills, including Internet experience, Microsoft Office, and databases; ability to perform detailed and precise work.
- Ability to learn new skills and adapt to changing needs.
- Must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one and must be able to travel to branches and training sessions.
