The City of Boise is accepting applications for an experienced, professional librarian to serve the community in Information Services at the main library downtown. Preferred candidates will express interest and experience with one or more specialties such as non-traditional, emerging technologies or local historical research.
  • Performs professional librarian duties, including customer service, program development, outreach, community service, training and direction to library customers and staff members.
  • Works with customers and staff to access a variety of information.
  • May be required to work at various locations in the library system.
  • Works 1 evening per week and rotating weekends to deliver the stellar customer service we provide to our community.
  • This position works under limited supervision.

Essential Functions Manages development, design and implementation of library programs, community events and public instruction workshops. Determines program content, community partners and delivery methods. Negotiates contracts with authors, performers, presenters and vendors. Establishes and maintains community partnerships in order to provide educational and recreational opportunities to library users. Coordinates the advertising and marketing of library programs. Provides support and training in technology use and topics, reference and reader's advisory services and assists users with research through the use of the online library system and all library resources. Builds subject guides and finds aids or other educational materials to help users identify and access print and digital government information. Evaluates, develops and implements department policies and procedures to library users and staff. Determines the best course of action to resolve issues and conflict resolution. Participates in interdivisional teams. Collaborates with staff in other library divisions/locations, city departments and outside organizations and governmental entities to develop new offerings and improve existing offerings. Assists supervisor and management with activities such as training, mentoring and scheduling staff, measuring staff activity, reporting, resolving issues, etc. Curates an advanced knowledge base of library resources and practices. Maintains an awareness of current trends and technologies that affect library services and customers. Performs all duties of lower-level library positions, in addition to providing mentoring and team coordination; performs more complex, skilled tasks, and assists others as required.Performs other duties as assigned.   • Master's degree in library and information science and
  • 4 years of experience working in a public library developing and implementing library programs and providing reference and reader's advisory service, or
  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Knowledge of:
  • public library approaches, policies and procedures;
  • quality customer service techniques;
  • theory and practice of reference services;
  • intellectual freedom and open access;
  • print, electronic and web-based library resources;
  • computer usage including related software such as Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and ILS systems; and
  • the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).
Ability to:
  • demonstrate leadership to staff;
  • work effectively with diverse personalities and populations, using tact, good reasoning and sound judgment;
  • analyze and resolve customer issues;
  • organize, implement, evaluate and modify programs;
  • speak in public and make effective presentations to groups;
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Master's degree in library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university and
  • 6 years of experience in a public library setting developing and implementing library programs.
  • Two years of experience performing duties of a professional librarian in a reference or adult services field or division.
