Essential Functions
- Checks out and checks in books and materials;
- Maintains circulation records, maintains and updates library card database to reflect changes in patron status including address, name, and published death notice;
- Receives fines for overdue, lost or damaged books and/or materials;
- Places reserved notice in computer for requested materials/books.
- Checks in books from book drop;
- Prepares periodicals for bindery;
- Answers questions and provides assistance to patrons, verifies resident status for issuance of appropriate library card;
- Prepares materials, books, films and crafts for weekly Story Hour;
- Conducts Story Hours and assists with other library programs;
- Conducts tours of library facilities to orient patrons as to available resources;
- Occasionally provides library information in person and by using technology at school functions, PTA meetings, community events, etc;
- Sorts and distributes incoming mail;
- Re-shelves books, cleans bindings.
- Develops bulletin board displays of special events, holidays or other topics of interest;
- Monitors activities of library patrons to ensure adherence with all policies and rules;
- Prepares cash register reports of received fines, fees, copier monies;
- Performs a variety of tasks in support of Friends of the Library including monitoring sales of tickets, T-shirts, and membership drives;
- Selects and organizes materials for display case(s).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of general library operating policies and procedures;
- Knowledge of library circulation principles and practices;
- Knowledge of library cataloging systems, including Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress;
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other city staff members and the general public;
- Skill in working effectively in an environment subject to constant interruptions and frequently changing priorities;
- Skill in following oral and written instructions;
- Skill in accurately performing basic arithmetic calculations.
- Knowledge of and proficient computer skills working with Microsoft Office Suite;
- Ability to work well with children, teens, adults, and general public.
Education and Experience High school graduate or high school equivalency, plus experience equivalent to one year full time clerical/office support work. Valid TN/VA Driver's License.The City of Kingsport does not currently offer any benefits for Part-Time, Seasonal, or Temporary Employess.
