Candidates must be able to work evenings and every other Saturday.This entry-level position at the Decatur Public Library involves providing circulation and clerical support throughout the public library. Responsibilities include performing a variety of basic tasks related to library circulation services, while interacting extensively with the public. Strong discretion and tact are essential when handling patron inquiries and interactions. Key Responsibilities
- Provide general customer service at the circulation desk, answering patron inquiries and handling phone calls.
- Process library materials: check items in/out, issue library cards, enter patron data, and file records.
- Sort and inspect returned materials for damage/missing parts; contact patrons if necessary.
- Search for lost/missing materials, collect fines, and manage circulation records.
- Assist with interlibrary loan processing and shelve checked-in materials
- Handle basic operations of copiers, phones, and assist with fee transactions.
Needed Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of circulation procedures, business English, spelling, arithmetic, and standard office practices.
- Familiarity with common computer applications and data entry processes.
- Ability to:
- Make basic arithmetic computations and write legibly.
- Understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Handle interactions with the public, including in challenging situations.
- Lift and carry boxes of library materials.
- Work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Learn and stay updated on the library's automated computer system.
- Perform repetitive motion tasks with full mobility.
- Turn, balance, push, handle, reach, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
- Physical requirements:
- Adequate eyesight, depth perception, and color vision.
- Ability to work in varied environments, including indoor/outdoor settings with temperature variations, noise, vibrations, and proper ventilation.
Desired Training and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in computer entry and general office clerical tasks, including public interaction
- Or an equivalent combination of training and relevant experience
