Job DescriptionThis position reports to the Technology Librarian/Technician Director and is responsible for supporting the public in using the Library's computers, printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines. The Library Computer Assistant is responsible for assisting the public in using various software applications in the Library Tech Center, assisting card holders in signing on to the public computers through our time management system, and issuing guest passes to non-card holders. Provide instructional services in both individual and group settings. These services include one-on-one technology support to community members that include: signing up & using library online services; setting up and managing email accounts; assisting with basic technology needs for job seeking; assisting with basic technology needs for housing and misc. social services; etc. This position is also responsible for maintaining, setting up, and resolving issues with the Library's computers and troubleshooting hardware and software problems. This role performs basic maintenance on technology equipment, clean technology equipment, set-up for technology equipment, troubleshooting technology equipment, minor repair on technology equipment and perform other technological support duties as assigned. This position also assists with strategy for the library's computers and networks, as well as recommends equipment and software. This position also assists with the development and teaching of technology classes both for the public and the library staff. This position assists with the hiring of classroom technology instructors and liaisons with them when needed.Requirements
- Explains, demonstrates and assists library users with use of Library equipment and software applications. May help patrons with operation of personal devices.
- Teach digital literacy skills in individual and group settings. Instruction areas may include, but not be limited to, Microsoft Office, online platforms (i.e. Facebook, etc.), and mobile technology.
- Perform security administration function for Public User Computers. Develops new computer classes that respond to emerging technologies and trends (i.e. new Apps, new devices, etc.)
- Assists with data collection and presentations for library statistics.
- Generates software reports from the library's software vendors as needed.
- Manages data collection for the Tech Center and for Computer Classes.
- Suggests new technologies to improve library efficiencies.
- Assists library users with wireless access on personal computers and electronic devices.
- Maintains current knowledge of hardware and software, and provides assistance to users with the use of the latest technology.
- Troubleshoots minor computer problems for library users and staff. Assists staff by identifying and reporting issues to them.
- Performs computer set up and troubleshooting for programs, classes, webinars, or meeting room reservation.
- Assists community groups and individuals with meeting room Audio-Visual equipment.
- Prepares and performs preventive maintenance for public and staff computers and laptops.
- Maintains operation and procedure records as required.
- Performs Tech Center opening and closing procedures as required.
- Uses personal computer, current software and other common office equipment.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Uses problem solving skills to assist in determining priorities, finding timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues and providing quality customer service.
- Provides quality assistance to staff by seeking to understand their needs and providing relevant support. Remains calm even in stressful conditions.
- Maintains a positive approach while doing daily tasks and when faced with adversity. Encourages and recognizes the contribution of others.
- Looks for ways to provide quality support to promote Library services.
- Tallies relevant statistics and creates statistical reports as needed.
- Provides information to library users about the programs and services available at the library.
- Provides basic reference service in-person, over the phone, and via email using print and electronic resources.
- Refers patrons to a reference librarian for difficult to answer or research related questions.
- Assists with training volunteers in the Computer Lab.
- Provide a variety of patron services using a fully integrated automated library system, including but not limited to; entering patron data, such as name and address and issuing library cards; recording changes of address/name and using the notes field to record special circumstances, charging library materials in-and-out.
- Searching the automated catalog to place holds; and process reserves and patron requests for information; renewing library books and materials for patrons in-house or over the telephone using ILS system. Use and help patrons with the OPAC as needed.
- Answer phone calls, phone requests, take and distribute messages. Perform ready reference as needed.
- Research and prepare order form for patron requests and provide correct information for Selectors or inter-library loan department.
- Responsible for opening and closing procedure for library tech center.
- Report violations of library rules or other conduct effecting library security to supervisor. Assists with trespass notices as needed.
- Perform light custodial and grounds maintenance tasks as needed.

- Bachelor's Degree in a related field or 4 years of relevant experience required.

- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals and documents required.
- Able to operate, adjust and troubleshoot computer workstations required.
- Ability to explore and research solutions to computer problems as they arise.
- Ability to interpret and communicate computer problems, including working with the City of Burlington IT Department.
- Familiar with publicly hosted email systems such as Gmail and Yahoo mail required.
- Familiar with Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office/SharePoint applications required.
- Familiar with webhosting software Drupal and WordPress.
- General understanding of Apple OS and Linux OS.
- Experience in working with Microsoft, Android and Android and Apple IO cellular and tablet devices.
- Strong commitment to positive and polite public service.
- Computer Lab and/or Library experience preferred.
- Software installation experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently after training is complete.
