Library Courier SubstituteJob Summary:The Courier picks up, transports and delivers library materials and interdepartmental mail to all Botetourt County Libraries, to Botetourt County offices and to Roanoke Valley Libraries consortium delivery pointsas required.Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

- Picks up, transports and delivers materials and interdepartmental mail to Botetourt County Libraries' branches and to other Botetourt County locations
- Picks up, transports and delivers materials and interdepartmental mail to other libraries in the Roanoke Valley Libraries consortium and to other County locations
- Sorts materials efficiently and accurately into correct transport bins
- Ensures adequate stock of transport bins at all Botetourt County Libraries branches
- Adheres to established transportation procedures and safe driving practices
- Obeys all traffic laws and regulations
- Refuels vehicle regularly
- Routinely inspect delivery vehicle to ensure proper working condition, including lights, gas gauge, mirrors, turn signals, tires and brakes
- Alerts appropriate staff to maintenance and repair needs
- Reports severe delays, accidents or other traffic/transportation issues
- Refuels delivery vehicle regularly
- Ensures that delivery vehicle interior and exterior are kept clean and notifies appropriate staff of detailing needs
- Schedules and/or takes vehicle to approved automotive repair shop(s) for maintenance and repairs as required
- Drops off Botetourt County Libraries recycling at nearby recycling centers as required
- Attends workshops or training as required
- Serves on community boards or library/consortium committees as assigned
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
- 2 years of commercial driving experience preferred
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license
- Demonstrated good driving record
- Able to read maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions
- Able to work independently with little or no supervision
- Able to evaluate weather conditions and recommend delivery service cancelation or rescheduling as needed
- Demonstrated ability to actively and positively engage with people of all demographics, backgrounds and walks of life
- Demonstrated superior customer service skills

- Lift transport bins weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Able to move about often inside the office to attend meetings; access files, library materials, office machines; and to interact with library patrons.
