JOB SPECIFICATIONLIBRARY/MEDIA TECHNICIANTHE POSITIONUnder general supervision of Site Administrator or Teacher Librarian, performs complex technical tasks in library/media work; provides library information, assistance and guidance for staff and students; processes and maintains site textbooks and instructional materials as well as all library materials; and performs related work as required.RESPONSIBLE TO: PrincipalDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class manage the operation of the school library/media center. Incumbents establish policies and services; provide library guidance to groups and individual students; assist instructional personnel in utilizing the library; select, order, and coordinate distribution of materials and equipment; instructs students/staff in library and online research skills, trains and provides work direction to student helpers and parent volunteers, maintains library media center so as to encourage use by students and staff. Web based instruction is contingent on the availability of functioning technology and equipment. The duties listed below are typical but not necessarily all inclusive for this position.EXAMPLES OF DUTIESThe duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
  • Manage the general operation of the school library/media center.
  • Evaluate, select and requisition new library/media materials.
  • Process library materials and text materials with suitable property markings, jacketing, packaging and storing.
  • Inform staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
  • Assist students and staff in the selection of materials and use of the library.
  • Demonstrate print and online research skills.
  • Demonstrate computer applications and database searching.
  • Access online resources and demonstrate search tools and techniques to staff/students.
  • Explain website evaluation to staff/students.
  • Instruct students and staff in cyber-safety and in digital citizenship.
  • Check books, audiovisual equipment, textbooks, and other instructional resources in and out of the library/media center.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive and efficient District-adopted system for cataloguing all library/media and textbook materials.
  • Maintain accurate files and inventories of textbooks, library books, hardware and software and equipment.
  • Remove obsolete and worn materials from the collections.
  • Perform minor repairs on library materials.
  • Prepare displays, exhibits and bulletin boards.
  • Work with students in groups.
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using the library facilities.
  • Maintain the library/media center in a neat, clean and attractive manner.
  • Train and supervise library staff in technical procedures.
  • Participate in district inservice programs.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDEKnowledge of:
  • Library science, organization, terminology and procedures.
  • Basic office routines and procedures.
  • Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation and penmanship.
  • Technological applications in library science.
Ability to:
  • Select and purchase library materials which support the curriculum.
  • Perform routine clerical work and prepare clear, concise reports.
  • Process books and library, textbook and instructional materials.
  • Learn specific rules and procedures used in a library setting.
  • Operate office machines, including computerized library management system.
  • Learn to operate and repair a variety of audiovisual equipment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Exercise independent judgement.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Certificate in Library Technology, Library Science, or Library Technician from an accredited college or university demonstrating completion of at least a two year training program.
  • Demonstrate experience within a library environment performing the necessary duties to manage a library collection.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
  • Mature emotional stability, interest in and understanding of students, good health; flexibility and patience.
SKILLS
  • Experience with web-based library and textbook management programs.
  • Ability to assist staff/students with online searching skills and computer applications.
  • Ability to direct student behavior within the library environment.
