Provides adult reference and technology services; Collaborates with other library staff to produce, adult services programming and to help develop community networking opportunities. Operates the library's outreach van visiting designated areas of the High Point community; Participates in other related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Research Services Supervisor. This is a non-supervisory position. Essential Tasks
  • Provide reference and technical computing assistance to the public communicating in person or over the telephone, finding information in library resources including books, periodicals, computerized sources, pertaining to a wide variety of subject areas
  • Assists the public with mobile computing devices, computerized periodical indexes, catalogs and photocopiers
  • Assists the division's supervisor in planning and providing programs for the public as requested
  • Networks to develop working partnerships within the Greater High Point nonprofit community and within other COHP departments to further library community outreach initiatives
  • Assists, as requested, in providing training for staff and the public for technology software applications, emerging technologies, post PC technology equipment including preparing written materials and oral presentations
  • Takes responsibility for daily operation of outreach van in consultation with direct supervisor and division manager as needed
  • Monitors computerized equipment in the division and onboard the outreach van as needed
  • Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Qualifications
  • Formal education, including completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Must have solid customer service skills, communication skills and a strong desire to interact with and help people
  • A cover letter and resume are required to complete an application for employment
  • Work experience in use of computers, smartphones, smartboards, word processing, database management, and additional computer software
  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license and insurance.
  • Must drive the library's outreach van to conduct community outreach activities and offer services and resources in designated areas of the Greater High Point community
  • Must be able to relate to and communicate effectively with other employees, and supervisors to maintain a positive customer service and work environment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret reference material in library records including card files and computers.
  • Must have basic working knowledge of community outreach procedures, and practices; A willingness to learn reference materials, and principles of reference service; general knowledge of reader interests, books and authors.
  • Exhibit a willingness to work on teams delivering outreach services and programming
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have and maintain thorough knowledge of current computer software and new trending technologies
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education- A bachelor's degree issued by an accredited academic institution
  • Years of experience- 1-2 years' work experience in public libraries or nonprofit outreach
  • Special skills- Database navigation skills; Community outreach experience
  • Schedule Requirements- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including one evening per week and some weekends.
Physical RequirementsHearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/22 - R 20/25 - L 20/25 corrected. Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.
  • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception - 4
  • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.Physical RequirementsAll five aspects are judged to be important in carrying out the essential functions of this job.Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
