Under the direction of the City Librarian, the Literacy Coordinator supports the planning, implementation, and monitoring of library literacy programs at the Carpinteria Community Library. This position plays a key role in fostering literacy and lifelong learning in the community by coordinating all literacy-related programs, addressing inquiries, and supporting tutors and students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Interview prospective students to assess literacy needs and determine the appropriate level of instruction.
* Assist with recruiting, training, and providing ongoing support to volunteer tutors.
* Track and report tutor and learner hours for monthly report to City Librarian and periodic reporting to the California Library Literacy Services (CLLS).
* Manage the acquisition of books and materials, including researching, ordering, and inventory tracking.
* Facilitate communication between different sectors of the program.
* Create and update class attendance lists.
* Organize and facilitate program events, such as celebrations and special speaker visits; creates bilingual flyers and signs; makes announcements to classes.
* Check messages (text, email, and phone) and responds in a timely manner.
* Facilitate effective communication between program participants, including learners and tutors, to ensure cohesive program operations.
* Provide regular tutor trainings and maintain attendance lists for classes.
* Create bilingual promotional materials such as flyers, announcements, and signage.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

Education and/or Experience
* An Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology OR successful completion of two (2) years of college coursework and (1) year of experience involving public contact or successful completion of three (3) years of college coursework OR three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience involving public contact or library services
* College graduate, desirable
License/Certificate/Other Requirements
All required licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.
* A valid appropriate California driver's license may be required
* Maintain a satisfactory driving record may be required
* Bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills are required
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

* Communicate comfortably with tutors and students in both English and Spanish via email, telephone, and in person
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, especially Word and Excel and navigate the Internet for research and program coordination
* Organize and facilitate events such as celebrations and special speaker visits; create flyers, announcements and signs; make announcements to the classes
* Learn existing and new literacy education principles
* Work independently and as an effective team member
* Generate and review reports, data, studies, and surveys
* Serve as a resource for the public and staff regarding various literacy projects and educational activities
* Establish, organize, and maintain manual and electronic filing, tracking, and recordkeeping systems
* Compose informational materials for print and online publication
* Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
* Train staff and volunteers in program procedures, tools, and resources
* Understand, interpret, and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures accurately
* Exercise sound independent judgement within established policies and procedures
* Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines, paying close attention to detail
* Follow oral and written instructions to complete assignments accurately and efficiently
* Respond to inquiries in a tactful manner and professional manner
* Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the general public
* Deliver excellent customer service, providing helpful and courteous assistance to all program participants and community members
