Your Opportunity
The Load Crew Supervisor will assist in accomplishing expedient loading of market pigs and improving weights to market under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor. Must be able to provide leadership and direction to the applicable Load Crew, train proper techniques in moving market animals and maintain biosecurity integrity.
Core Responsibilities
- Responsible for working with loadout crews to achieve targeted transportation losses
- Oversee and assist with facility and equipment/ chute maintenance
- Perform loadout audits of contract load crews
- Perform chute audits and address problems
- Follow the Finishing Standard Operating Procedures
- Communicate with contractor lead of any procedure changes.
- Communicate with finish supervisors any issues loadout crew encounters within the barns
- Maintain unit biosecurity. Requires showering in and out of facility; all work clothing is provided
- Ensure load crews have proper equipment available
- Maintain accurate records & ensure all contract documents and trainings are up to date
- Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield subscribes
- Complete investigations on loads with excessive dead
- Read and understand the company's emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site
- Participate in calls with the plants regarding DOA/DIPS
- Help communicate with loadout crews or transportation any load changes, breakdowns, trailer issues ect as they arise.
- Help sort loss mark pigs throughout the week as needed
- Report environmental issues immediately to the supervisor
- Follow Smithfield animal welfare policies and procedures including providing a physical environment that meets the animal's needs, providing access to adequate water and high-quality feed, providing humane treatment of the animals, providing identification and appropriate treatment of animals in need of health care and following the guidelines for euthanasia as outlined in the NPB publication, On Farm Euthanasia of Swine - Options for the Producer
- Responsible for understanding and training employees on all safety requirements of the job and for performing the job in compliance with the safety requirements.
- Schedule crew's days off and fill in when needed, with extra staffing
- Perform other tasks necessary for loadout or sort loss

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2+ years of related experience, required.

- Must be able to climb over, under, and around penning
- Must be able to continually lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to push, pull, drag up to 250 lbs. and work in situations involving a leaned-over or low to the ground situation
- Must be able to perform repetitive motions (i.e. lifting penning, giving inoculations)
- Must be able to work an average 45-hour week with an average 9-hour workday, which can vary frequently
- Must be able to work night shift or day shift (alternates throughout year)
- Rotating days off which requires weekend and holiday work
- Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, cesarean sections, boar de-tusking, ear tagging and tattooing for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry
- Must be able to work with a wide range of antibiotics (i.e. penicillin)
- Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently hot and noisy conditions
