Description
- Performs all duties in compliance with safety rules and regulations.
- Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs required inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance to ensure that locomotive mechanical and electrical systems conform to specifications and operate properly within design limits and intent.
- Completes inspection and repair reports according to company, FRA and AAR requirements, specifications and guidelines.
- Performs diagnostics, installation and repair of locomotive components to ensureproper operation and compliance with federal requirements and company specifications.
- Analyzes and corrects faults related to inspection, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and installation of locomotive equipment.
- Able to, or able to learn to read with accuracy diesel engine manuals, locomotive schematics, service bulletins, maintenance instructions and other craft related documentation.
- Tests, installs and repairs system components including but not limited to pumps, radiators, power assemblies, compressors, air brake repair/change, brush replacement, commutator repair, panel lighting, circuit breakers, and regulator repair/change to ensure all functions and equipment conform to required specifications.
- Regularly examines and verifies flow and pressure measurements, installation and alignment of rotating equipment, control points, relays and wiring, adjusting and replacing defective parts as needed.
- Performs operational qualification of mechanical and electrical control systems to verify conformance to specifications on locomotives using a variety of test equipment and procedures (i.e.: gages, dial indicators, manometers, meters, insulation break-down test devices, specialized tooling and live system measurements).
- Able to read and understand FRA, AAR, and company rules, specifications and guidelines; able to legibly document items of non-compliance as required.
- Assists in all other repairs and maintenance as assigned by immediate supervisor.
- Utilizes various hand and power tools, keeping them in a safe working condition.
- Performs repairs and modifications to equipment by cutting, welding, and use of other metal work operations.
- Drives company vehicles and equipment such as cars, trucks, forklift, scissor lift, etc.
- Wears Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to steel toe boots; ear and eye/face protection, high visibility wear and hard hat.
- Uses fall protection for inspecting and servicing locomotives.
- Safely uses various greases, oils and cleaners to service locomotives, maintain equipment, and clean tools and equipment.
- Requires regular and timely attendance.
- Promptly reports and safeguards unsafe conditions and reports injuries to Supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
RequirementsExperience/Education/Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- 2+ years of experience in heavy equipment, diesel engine maintenance, and/or transportation equipment electrical system maintenance is required.
- 1+ years of experience in locomotive maintenance preferred.
- Technical and/or specialized mechanic/technician training preferred.
- Perceived aptitude in the heavy equipment mechanical, diesel engine and/or transportation electrical fields, demonstrating a desire and ability to learn is required.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to attain a commercial license.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge and developed skills in locomotive or general heavy equipment mechanical and/or electrical maintenance and repair is required.
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, blueprints, service publications, wiring diagrams and flow diagrams is required.
- Developed skills effectively using testing equipment such as micrometers, dial indicators and gages is required; experience using electrical testing equipment such as insulation test devices, volt meters and ohm meters is preferred.
- Ability to use cutting torches and welding equipment is preferred.
- Ability to properly and safely use hand tools, power tools, air tools, etc.
- Must possess a strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrate an attention to detail in all maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge and understanding of applicable operating rules, safety rules and safe job procedures, including passing of applicable exams.
- Must comply with instructions furnished in written, oral and schedule formats.
- Must be able to read and comprehend published rules, procedures, manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operation and maintenance instructions, memos, and other work information.
- Ability to read and speak English clearly is required.
- Must be able to write legibly.
- Ability to distinguish color is required.
- Employment is contingent on results of a pre-employment background check, a physical capability test, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and a pre-employment medical exam. Continued employment is subject to passing random drug tests.
Working Conditions:
- Will work on railcars and locomotives as required.
- Will work both inside and outside.
- May be subject to various temperatures and conditions which may include extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, and snow.
- May need to work on elevated surfaces and uneven surfaces, including ballast.
- Exposure to high noise level, moving mechanical parts, and moving equipment.
- Exposure to gasoline/diesel exhaust oil and grease.
- Work hours are based on 40-hour work weeks; some overtime will be required.
