The LPN plays an integral role in patient care by performing routine tasks such as taking vital signs, administering medications, assisting with patient activities, and providing support to patients and their families. LPNs work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and home care.Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Care:
    • Provide direct patient care, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility.
    • Monitor patients' physical and emotional condition, including checking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration).
    • Administer prescribed medications and treatments, such as oral medications, injections, and dressings.
    • Assist in wound care and maintenance of medical devices, including catheters, IVs, and feeding tubes.
  • Patient Assessment and Monitoring:
    • Observe and document changes in patient condition, including symptoms, response to treatments, and side effects of medications.
    • Report any changes in patient status to the supervising RN or physician for further evaluation.
    • Monitor patients for any adverse reactions to medications, treatments, or procedures.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to provide patient education and updates.
    • Assist the RN or physician in preparing patients for examinations, diagnostic tests, and procedures.
    • Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and adjust care plans based on patient needs.
  • Documentation:
    • Accurately record patient information, including assessments, interventions, and responses to treatment, in the electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Maintain patient records in compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory standards.
  • Infection Control and Safety:
    • Follow infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Ensure patient safety by adhering to safety protocols and reporting hazards or potential risks.
  • Patient Education:
    • Educate patients and families on basic care procedures, medication administration, and lifestyle modifications.
    • Provide emotional support and address concerns, promoting patient comfort and well-being.
  • Assisting in Procedures:
    • Assist with basic medical procedures, including drawing blood, collecting specimens, and performing routine lab tests.
    • Assist in preparing and sterilizing equipment for procedures, ensuring a clean and safe environment.
  • Supervision and Teamwork:
    • Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse or physician, taking direction on patient care tasks and interventions.
    • May assist in mentoring or supervising nursing assistants or other junior healthcare staff.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program.
  • Licensure:
    • Valid LPN license in the state of employment.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience as an LPN in a clinical or healthcare setting preferred, but not always required. New graduates may be considered.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of basic nursing procedures and patient care techniques.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
    • Ability to assess patient condition and provide appropriate interventions under supervision.
    • Proficient in using medical equipment and understanding of infection control protocols.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift, move, and reposition patients as needed.
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
    • Capability to perform physical tasks, including assisting patients with mobility and activities of daily living.
