RequirementsPosition Summary: Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, press brakes, laser, saw and grinders to machine metal work pieces according to specifications, tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods. Sets up and operates conventional or CNC equipment.Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Reads blueprints or job orders for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances and tooling instructions such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determines sequence of operations.
  • Selects, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, tool post, etc.). Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps or wrenches.
  • Operates controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other and sets specified feeds, speeds, depth of cut, bends, etc.
  • Sets up fixture or feeding device, starts machine and turns hand wheel to feed tool or work piece or vice versa, and engages feed.
  • Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machine work piece to specifications using measuring instruments.
  • Multi-machining, editing and simple programming required in some areas (CNC machines).
  • Some machine maintenance required.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
  • Ability to use fixed gauges, calipers and micro meters.
  • Good shop math skills: practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
  • Knowledge and ability to set and program various machine shop machines.
  • Ability to read safety rules; instructions in the use of maintenance of shop tools and equipment; methods and procedures in mechanical drawings and layout work.
  • Manual dexterity; mechanically inclined and good eye/hand coordination.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane.
  • Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in operation of shop machines preferred.
  • Working Conditions:
  • Ability to lift, push or pull up to 35 pounds alone and greater than 35 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time (up to 8+ hours) as required by tasks being completed.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE, including hearing/eye protection, gloves and safety shoes.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed to complete job assignments.
  • Ability to work in a non-climate controlled manufacturing plant environment.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to tolerate heights.
  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching and climbing as required by tasks being completed.
