UW Facilities manages the University's buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.
We have an outstanding opportunity for a Machinery Mechanic.
Under the supervision of the supervisor and lead, perform general mechanical inspections, maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment. Position requires a general knowledge of several related skill fields, such as plumbing, electrical, welding, and machinist work.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairing on all types of mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, heating ventilation and air condition equipment, compressors, v-belts and sheaves, hydraulic systems, laboratory apparatus, hospital and food service equipment.
* Clean or change filters, change oil, lubricate, adjust drive belts, and inspect sprockets, shafts, and bearings to ensure proper operation.
* Interpret mechanical systems operations and technical specifications manuals.
* Operate machine shop equipment, including engine lathe, drill press, grinder, milling machine, hydraulic press, to fabricate and repair machinery components.
* Develop cost estimates for installation and repairs.
* Operate a variety of hand, power, precision, and stationary shop tools and equipment.
* Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, needed materials and equipment.
* Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers.
* Load and unload materials and supplies.
* Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
* May instruct semiskilled workers.
* Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops and other business partners such as Engineering Services to facilitate work.
* Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
* Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, M&C protocols, i.e. Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
* Support all management directives and the vision and values of M&C.
* Participate in and follow through with M&C process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.
* Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

Requirements include:
* Full journey status as a Machinery Mechanic by work experience, vocational, or trade school, or apprenticeship programs, or any combination of the above;
or, four years of applied work experience.
Vocational training may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
* Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
* Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
* Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products
* Experience in equipment and machinery maintenance of institutional, industrial and/or commercial environments.
* Knowledge of and experience with boilers, furnaces and pressure vessels.
* Certification as a bucket truck operator; qualified crane operator, knowledge of and experience with grounds maintenance equipment, forklifts, gas and diesel engines, dump trucks, 5th wheels, hydraulic systems, marine engines and aerial service equipment.
* Knowledge of and experience with the maintenance and repair of kitchen equipment, such as dish machines, dish belts, slicers, steam kettles, choppers, mixers, ovens, garbage disposals and salad bars.
* Knowledge of and experience with:
o (1) Predictive maintenance technologies which may include vibration analysis, infrared imaging thermography, lubrication analysis, electric motor diagnostics precision alignment, machinery balancing and/or ultrasound
o (2) Operation of machine shop equipment and weld processes/repair
o (3) Troubleshooting and repairing of heat ventilation and air condition systems and components
o (4) Plumbing and electrical systems related to mechanicals
o (5) Aligning mechanical drives such as shaft, coupling and rotating elements.

* Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
* Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
* Regular and predictable attendance is required.
