Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, providing high-quality representation of individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and cannot afford private lawyers. We are a group of attorneys and non-attorneys from diverse backgrounds who are experienced in criminal law and believe in fighting for every persons constitutional right to a fair trial and in working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences and provide other post-conviction services.

Position Description: Appellate Advocates is seeking a full-time Mailroom Clerk to assist the offices operations.

Responsibilities:

Regular travel by subway to courthouses in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island to copy, scan, and/or retrieve legal documents

Scan, label, and electronically organize documents and files in-office for use by attorneys, paralegals, and other staff

Process copying, mailing, binding, and other office-related services requests from staff

Organize, process, and distribute incoming and outgoing mail

As needed, assist with other clerical tasks and with internal moves of furniture, files, and computer equipment

Maintaining and stocking office supplies and materials, watering office plants as needed, and ensuring general orderliness and cleanliness of the staff kitchen(s)

Qualifications:

Attention to detail, especially with ensuring all needed tasks are completed

Ability to operate independently, including off-site when retrieving documents

Ability to multi-task and handle competing deadlines

Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe, and basic Windows computing

Possession of (or ability to obtain) a New York Secure Pass for court access

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular lifting of heavy objects up to 50 pounds and larger items up to 100 pounds with the assistance of carts, hard carts, and dollies as necessary

Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience based on a collectively bargained step scale, with a range from $48,340 to $69,825. Appellate Advocates offers a generous benefits package, including health and vision insurance, a 401(k), flexible spending and transit account, and paid sick and vacation time.
