MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE

GENERAL PURPOSE
Provide support to the maintenance department while learning the skills necessary to become a maintenance mechanic through participation in rotations, a training program, or similar structured activities.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Assist maintenance mechanics/technicians on maintenance calls and new installations
· Perform basic maintenance tasks independently, as assigned
· Work alone to broaden knowledge base and demonstrate learned on-the-job skills
· Assist in replacement electrical devices as required
· Complete routine maintenance on plant and processing equipment
· Perform simple welding and plumbing
· Maintain the grounds
· Maintain work areas in a neat and orderly fashion
· Complete all plant, utility rounds, and maintenance production logs sheets
· Maintain safe working conditions for employees and compliance with all state and federal regulations regarding health and safety issues
· Follow all DFA good manufacturing practices (GMP) and work in a manner consistent with all corporate regulatory, food safety, quality, and sanitation requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Graduation from trade school or technical school preferred in areas such as electrical, programmable controls (PLC/HMI), mechanical, welding/fabrication, refrigeration, plumbing, etc.
· 0 to 1 year of maintenance, mechanical, construction, or related experience
· Certification and/or License – may be required during course of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Knowledge of charts, tables, drawings, specifications
· Knowledge of schedules and wiring diagrams
· Able to use standard maintenance tools
· Able to perform basic maintenance activities and assist on more complicated repairs in a safe and useful manner
· Able to follow directions
· Able to work effectively in a team environment
· Able to work with attention to detail
· Able to take appropriate steps to find solutions to problems
· Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
· Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
· Must be able to read, write and speak English
