Primary Functions and Job Details This is a skilled position tasked with the performance of carpentry functions related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of all municipal buildings, facilities, and equipment. The employee in this class applies knowledge, experience and demonstrated proficiency in the products, materials, techniques and methods typically associated with the carpentry trade in order to perform minor repairs to interior and exterior building elements as well as park equipment and amenities. Assignments are received by oral and written instruction. Supervision and direction may be exercised over other maintenance workers. Examples Of Essential Duties
- Follows safe practices in the performance of all duties.
- Installs, repairs and maintains interior and exterior architectural building elements including doors, windows, floors, roofs, paneling, partitions, walls, ceilings, and trim.
- Repairs, constructs, or otherwise assembles and installs tables, shelves, office furniture, and other related furnishings, fixtures, and equipment.
- Performs renovations and/or remodeling work in municipal offices, parks, and other City-owned properties, including those with a historic designation.
- Builds/constructs rough structures such as barricades, fences, concrete forms, staging, and scaffolding.
- Cuts, hangs, patches, and finishes drywall.
- Applies finishes to prepared surfaces, including but not limited to primer, paint, wood stain, and polyurethane.
- Installs and maintains fixtures, hardware, accessories, and fittings such as handles, drawer pulls, locks, hinges, and closers.
- Cuts keys affiliated with the City's proprietary secure keying system and performs maintenance and repairs to components of such systems including key cores, padlocks, and mortises.
- Performs hand and bench work using power saws, planers, joiners, drill presses and other woodworking tools and machinery.
- Maintains tools and equipment, including the repair of hand tools, shovels, rakes, etc.
- Maintains parts and tool inventories related to the carpentry trade.
- Plans small projects, including development of specifications and estimates for materials and labor, as assigned; schedules work in conjunction with team members, supervisors and customers to ensure mutual satisfaction.
- Maintains written or computer-based logs on maintenance activity, including time, labor, materials, and task(s) performed.
- Cleans all materials from work sites and properly stores tools and equipment for future use.
- Operates vehicles and small equipment, including skid loader and lifts, as necessary.
- Provides insight and assistance to vendors, third-party contractors, and others as assigned.
- Assists other building maintenance personnel and tradesmen with other minor repairs as needed.
- Removes and clears snow during inclement weather emergencies as assigned.
Typical Qualifications Education, Training and Experience
- Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
- At least three (3) years' experience in the commercial and residential carpentry trade is required.
- Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship and/or completion of a course of study in carpentry at a vocational school is preferred.
- Experience in use and maintenance of standard tools used in construction and maintenance of Public Works facilities is required.
Licenses and Certificates
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania State Driver's License is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
- Advanced knowledge of supplies, hand tools, power tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in the carpentry trade is required.
- Advanced knowledge of interior and exterior building construction finishes and maintenance best practices as it applies to the carpentry trade.
- Proven ability to take accurate measurements and perform basic mathematical and geometric calculations (e.g. length/height, area, volume, etc.)
- Proven ability to select lumber and other building materials by size and strength to suit each assignment, and properly calculate the type and number of fasteners required.
- Proven ability to read and interpret floorplans, blueprints, wiring diagrams and other visual representations of the built environment.
- Proven ability to work independently to perform routine operations involved with the carpentry trade.
- Proven ability to provide and maintain an awareness of security requirements on all work sites and conduct oneself in a trustworthy manner.
- Ability to work from heights at elevations up to 60' above grade, including use of fall protection equipment for safety.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to successfully use standard construction safety equipment, including but not limited to personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, ear protection, respirators, etc.
- Demonstrated skills in building and equipment preservation.
- Demonstrated skills in painting, patching and repairing interior and exterior walls.
- Ability to utilize hand-held electronic communication devices (e.g. smartphone, tablet, etc.) as well as applicable software, including but not limited to email and a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), to communicate effectively and report upon work performed.
- Knowledge of building Access Control Systems and electronic security systems is preferred.
- Ability to develop specific goals and plans, prioritize, and organize, to accomplish work.
- Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and harmonious relationships with other employees, suppliers, vendors and supervisors.
- Proven ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations is required.
