Position Type: Operations/MaintenanceDate Posted: 10/15/2024Location: Zoo KnoxvilleJob Title: Maintenance Craftsman Department: Maintenance Date Updated: October 2024 Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor Status: Full Time, Non-exempt Supervises: N/A Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under direct supervision, the Maintenance Craftsman will work with the Maintenance Supervisor and Zoo staff to accomplish the general maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of facilities including, but not limited to, all equipment, buildings, enclosures, and utility systems contained on Zoo grounds or used in support of Zoo programs. This person will perform maintenance related tasks, troubleshooting and diagnosing problems and, with assistance, determine the most effective way to correct them. The person in this position has the task of maintaining and improving the daily appearance and functionality of the zoo's grounds and facilities. This individual must keep the Maintenance Supervisor informed of activities, accomplishments, project status and requirements. RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Follow the procedures and guidelines relating to the wellbeing and care of the buildings, facilities, and equipment, including preventative maintenance programs. This includes constantly observing each of these and reporting problems or concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Follow and perform the routinely scheduled (daily and long range) operations and activities of the Maintenance Department. These include regular operations such as, but not limited to:
- Repair and maintain machines, mechanical equipment, plumbing, and HVAC equipment.
- Diagnose and repair damaged or destroyed structures.
- Diagnose and repair specialize equipment and machinery.
- Installation of new systems or expanding present ones.
- Installation of new components.
- Preventive maintenance and safety device functionality.
- Diagnose and repair of drainage systems.
- Minor repair of lighting, other electrical devices.
- Repair of wall surfaces and re-painting or otherwise finishing out of walls.
- Repair of doors and locks.
- Some proficiency in the safe operation of maintenance equipment to include, but not limited to, trucks, ladders, shovels, brooms, picks, power hand tools (drills, saws, grinders, cut off saws, band saws, etc.), hand tools (tape measures, screwdrivers, levels, squares, pliers, wrenches, etc.), and other types of maintenance / repair tools and equipment involved with facility maintenance.
- Maintaining the quality, appearance, cleanliness, safety, functionality, and usability of the park, its grounds, buildings and facilities, and all utility systems contained within and leading to the park on a continual basis and in the most timely, efficient, economical, and organized manner. This includes all public, animal, and support areas, and all interior and exterior components.
- Maintaining the quality of all Zoo property and resources, natural or man-made, which is undeveloped, used for purposes other than public or exhibit areas, or held in reserve for future use.
- Assistance with installation, set-up, and removal of special / temporary exhibits, special events, or other event-related operations.
- Requesting of supplies for the repair and completion of assigned tasks.
- Follow established operating procedures and guidelines to include, but not limited to, carpentry, welding, mechanical repair, electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, HVAC, concrete forming / finishing, hydraulics, safety, care and maintenance of equipment, buildings, enclosures and utility systems, refuse management and recycling.
- Complete daily reports of activities, material / equipment use, and time management.
- Work with other Zoo departments to develop and implement a positive and educational visitor and staff experience. Provide professional quality customer service to both internal and external customers, as well as outside vendors and contractors. This includes, but is not limited to, language and work ethics.
- Demonstrate continued interest in and knowledge of advancements in the facility and equipment maintenance fields.
- Adherence to any policies set forth by Knoxville Zoo or the Maintenance Department to comply with all governmental or other regulatory agencies, including, but not limited to national, state, and local electrical and building and plumbing codes, as well as ADA standards, AZA standards, USDA (Animal and Plant Regulations), TWRA, OSHA, MOSH, EPA, DOT, etc.
- This position will require hands-on involvement. The individual assuming these responsibilities will be aware of the potential health and injury risks inherent with the operations of tools, machinery, vehicles, chemical use, heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds), and working in potentially dangerous animal and public environments.
- This individual will present a professional and neat appearance at all times. The attire will be the standard Knoxville Zoo uniform. A nametag will be worn at all times when representing this position.
- Other duties and tasks as requested or required by the Maintenance Coordinator, Maintenance Supervisor, and Operations or Executive Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS: The individual in this position should have the following minimal qualifications and be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Must have a valid state issued driver license.
- Must have a clean driving record.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of one year experience in a facility maintenance position.
- Must be organized, efficient, accurate, self-motivated, and neat.
- Communicate effectively in English (oral and written), follow oral and written instructions, and use a two-way radio.
- Physically able to work in extreme temperatures (both inside and outside) and inclement weather conditions; walking an average of 10 miles per day; standing 90% of the time; lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds a distance of 25 feet; performing tasks in an environment that requires repeatedly stooping, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling and crawling while working maneuvering tools and supplies to service areas that often contain insects and poison ivy.
- Physically able and willing to safely work around delicate, large, unpredictable, and dangerous animals.
- Ability to work independently or with co-employees/volunteers, outside service personnel or contractors in a positive, professional manner consistent with Zoo Knoxville policies and procedures.
- Use common disinfectants and cleansers, and work in and around dusty enclosures/storage areas.
- Use common hand tools, power tools, light equipment, and medium to heavy equipment.
- Must have a basic understanding of building, equipment, and facility construction, maintenance and improvement practices
- Accept regular weekend, holiday, occasional after hour assignments, and be able to change days off as needed.
- Adhere to zoo/departmental policies and safety procedures.
- Ability to react quickly, effectively and logically in a high stress or emergency situation.
- Prior experience at an accredited AZA Zoological Facility preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a hands-on position and the individual must be physically capable of safely operating the variety of tools and equipment listed above and accomplishing the duties and responsibilities as outlined above. The position hours vary depending on business needs and will require early morning, late evenings, weekend, and some holiday shifts. This position may require heavy lifting and moving (up to and possibly in excess of 100 pounds) repeatedly and be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force periodically. The individual must be able to work while bending, crouching, kneeling, or balancing for extended periods of time, and should be able to crawl, push, pull, climb, while maneuvering tools and supplies, and be able to remain on feet for extensive periods. The individual assuming these responsibilities will be aware of health and injury risks inherent with traversing to/from and working at elevated heights, below ground level, in confined spaces and with the operations of machinery, various hand and power tools, vehicles, chemical use, etc. Depending on the specific tasks, this position will be required to work within close proximity of exotic and domestic animals and must be aware that there are dangers inherent in working under those conditions. This position is considered essential personnel and must report to work as usual even when the Zoo is closed due to extreme weather conditions.
