Position: Maintenance Craftsman (2) - Part Time (3 to 7pm)Department: Public Buildings Reports to: Director of Public Buildings Affiliation: SEIU Local 888Salary range: $26.47 to $32.20 per hourApproved by: Superintendent of Schools & City Manager SUMMARY: The Maintenance Craftsman assists maintenance technicians in installing maintaining and repairing the Watertown's School and Town buildings including but not limited to offices, classrooms, furnishings, and equipment for the City of Watertown. Performs other related work or other maintenance requirements as required.This job requires initiative, organizational problem solving skills, and the ability to acquire knowledge of program operations, policies and procedures. Incumbents are expected to work independently and carry out work details without requiring the immediate attention of an administrator(s). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work that is performed and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for by this position.   • Unskilled repairs and/or assist craftsman in repairing district property, system and/or components such as offices, classrooms, work space, partitions, paneling, ceilings, furniture, cabinets, bathroom partitions, thresholds, drywall, doors/jams, screens, locks, glass panes, flooring, siding, sheathing, stairs, railing porches, ceiling panels, wall coverings, cabinets, and simple furniture (e.g. bookcases, cabinets, tables, stands, and partitions) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient utilization of space.
  • Mounts, hangs, and repairs, and/or assist craftsman, in installs/assembles system component parts, playground, classroom and office equipment and facility components for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable and operating condition. (e.g. chalk/dry erase boards, tables, chairs, shelving, projector screens, chairs, storage devises, etc.)
  • Aids all trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC and carpentry) with work orders, to include carrying/moving large objects, equipment, furniture and assisting with all safety requirements (e.g. holding ladders, spotting other employees, restricting access to work areas).
  • Paints walls, ceiling, trim throughout the schools and city buildings primarily in offices, classrooms and stairwells
  • Moves equipment and materials within and between school and town buildings
  • Delivers mail and packages to various buildings throughout the school district and town as needed.
  • Manages the key management program for school and town buildings.
  • Makes name plates and signs as needed.
  • Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Assist with snow removal around school and town buildings (e.g. walkways, entrances, stairs and parking areas as needed)
  • Request equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently. Estimates labor or material costs/amounts as needed.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of all equipment and needed resources.
  • Able to handle hand tools, small power tools, and supplies to perform unskilled labor.
  • Expresses ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing in the English language.
  • Complies with local, state, or federal guidelines laws and regulations include safety guidelines.
  • Complies with state codes, fire codes and OSHA.
  • Uses and cares for hand tools and equipment necessary to perform various non-skilled repairs tasks
  • Performs emergency work; responds to emergencies
  • Coordinates with custodian staff and other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently
  • Performs additional job-related maintenance duties as assigned by the Director of Public Buildings

Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; adapting to changing work priorities; and meeting deadlines and schedules.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Education: High school or vocational school diploma. Advanced technical training preferred.Requirements/Experience:Three years of experience in maintenance work involving repair and maintenance of buildings, office equipment and furnitureBasic knowledge of all trades including carpentry, painting, plumbing, HVAC and electrical.Basic computer skills (e.g. typing, email, word, excel & work order inputs)Experience/knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautionsValid Massachusetts Driver's License with no serious violationsDemonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabularyClearances: Criminal Justice/Fingerprint ClearancePHYSICAL DEMANDS:The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, speak and hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions; required to work in confined spaces and lift or move items weighing up to 60, and sometimes more than 100, pounds. Physical ability is required to use carpentry equipment, power and hand tools, lifts and use heavy equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to read and analyze documents, use a computer and operate a motor vehicle. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination and the ability to distinguish color. The employee must be able to input information into a computer and as well as read material from a computer monitor as well as printed matter with or without visual aids. The employee must be able to communicate effectively other staff members in order to exchange accurate information.WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending on the activity and the particular part of the day and location. The employee interacts with other staff members and occasionally must meet multiple demands from several people.Work is performed indoors and some outdoors work, with exposure to adverse weather conditions; frequently required to work in proximity to high voltage power sources, work in confined spaces and in high places. The employee is required to respond to weather-related emergencies.The employee operates standard office equipment, carpentry equipment, hand and power tools, trucks and light equipment.
