Allen CountyJob Descriptions MAINTENANCE ASSISTANTDepartment: Allen Superior Court - ACJC FLSA Status: Non-exemptClassification/Level: LTC - IV Date Last Reviewed: 12/10/2014Under the direction of the Facilities Director, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of general repair and maintenance procedures at the Allen County Juvenile Center and Allen County Juvenile Probation locations. This position is covered under the Superior Court Employee Handbook. This is an employee-at-will position.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and repairs basic and complex electrical components and equipment failures to public areas and secure detention facility including but not limited to building generator, office equipment, kitchen equipment and light fixtures.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and repairs all plumbing fixtures within the public areas and secure detention facility, including but not limited to basic bathroom equipment, special detention facility plumbing to prevent overflow and flooding within the secure detention facility and sump pumps.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and repairs HVAC equipment including but not limited to belt replacement, motor lubrication, air conditioner/evaporator cleaning and filter replacements.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and repairs security system equipment such as cameras, intercoms, door controls, electromagnetic and mechanical locks to maintain safety throughout the facility.
  • Constructs, repairs and replaces various structural items, shelves, cabinets, drawers including but not limited to wood work, metal work, painting, plastering and remodeling of items ranging from ceilings, walls and/or concreted areas of the facility.
  • Maintains grounds at multiple locations by mowing, trimming, removing weeds and leaves, pruning bushes and trees, and snow removal.
  • Maintains cleanliness of public areas and secure detention facility including but not limited to sweeping, moping, stripping and waxing various types of flooring. Sanitizes high traffic areas and removes trash.
  • Repairs broken metal facility equipment through the use of electric or gas welders/torches.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Specialized training beyond high school in electrical, HVAC, mechanical and plumbing fields and at least one year of related experience
  • Valid Driver's license to operate county owned vehicles
  • OSHA Certification
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures with ability to ensure safety of self, staff and residents
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems
  • Ability to operate snow removal, mowing and landscaping equipment
  • Ability to perform indoor janitorial services, including operating industrial floor equipment, painting, minor dry walling, repairing office equipment, and performing other repairs in and around the facility
REQUIREMENTS (continued):
  • Ability to operate pickup truck, snowplow, a variety of hand and power tools, micrometers, and tractors
  • Ability to use computers and peripheral equipment, applicable software, and standard modern office equipment
  • The ability to adapt to new changes and technologies in equipment and software.
DIFFICULTY OF WORK:The Maintenance Assistant performs work that is moderately complex when troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing electrical components, HVAC, plumbing and mechanical equipment. Must have the ability to interpret work instructions and have practical knowledge of tools and equipment.RESPONSIBILITY:The Maintenance Assistant is involved in varied tasks and works on part of a total work process when performing general maintenance at four locations, Allen County Juvenile Center, Deer Run, South Probation Office and East Allen Probation Office. Work is performed under moderate supervision.PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:The Maintenance Assistant maintains frequent contact with other county employees, persons from other agencies, the public and potentially violent juveniles.WORKING CONDITIONS:The Maintenance Assistant works inside and outside with very frequent exposure to dangerous equipment, chemicals, and noxious odors/fumes. Frequent exposure to temperature extremes and noise is required. Frequent standing and walking with some sitting is required. The Maintenance Assistant frequently lifts up to sixty pounds, must be able to frequently climb ladders and very frequently bend, push and/or pull loads, reach over head, crawl and kneel.
