GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASSThis is skilled work in repairing and maintaining buildings, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and other mechanical equipment. Work involves performing various miscellaneous mechanical and building trades in general maintenance work. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees. Work is performed without close supervision but is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS* Performs various repairs and adjustments to the plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, electrical fixtures, doors, windows and locks, pumps, and small engines.* Changes ballast and transformers on light fixtures.* Installs and makes repairs to electrical circuits .* Initiates general repairs to air-conditioning systems, checks electrical circuits on units, and installs low-voltage thermostats and controls.* Initiates general repairs to all plumbing systems, including cast iron, PVC, CPVC, and copper.* Repairs ice machines and water coolers; changes compressors and repairs and recharges systems; checks electrical equipment, motors, and fans.* Operates maintenance equipment; makes minor repairs to building infrastructures and furniture; cleans guttering; cleans HVAC systems.* Repairs and maintains varied office equipment and building components.* Performs preventative maintenance on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.* Solders, rivets, seams, and bolts metal parts as required; repairs buildings, boilers, and shelters; repairs and maintains varied office equipment.* Performs skilled carpentry repairs, operating power saws and other standard carpentry tools in a Carpenter shop.* May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.* Position designated as Mission Critical.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:* May perform basic painting functions, such as preparing surfaces to be coated, applying primers, mixing and matching paints, and applying finish work by bush or air gun.* Operates facility energy control, mechanical, and lighting systems.* Provides support in hanging banners and signs related to events.* Provides temporary electrical and water services when required.* Assists with operational setups related to events as needed.* Performs related work as required.QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)* High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.* Two (2) years of experience in building trades work and/or the maintenance of HVAC or other facility systems.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.* Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.* May be required to pass an elevated background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department upon hire.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES* Knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools of the maintenance trade.* Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to various mechanical trades.* Skill in using a wide range of building trade tools and shop equipment.* Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, lift trucks, and bucket trucks.* Ability to understand and work from sketches, penciled layouts, rough plans, and specifications.* Ability to keep routine records and to make reports.* Ability to use electronic work order system.* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City employees, and the general public.WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:* Medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.* The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, dust, pollen, extreme heat/cold, wet/humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes/noxious odors, traffic, and moving machinery.* The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.* Requires working from ladders, scaffolds, lift trucks, and bucket trucks to perform essential functions (RP Funding).All City of Lakeland positions are subject to testing (e.g. written, oral, performance, computerized, interview, and/or any combination).
