Performs other duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry-level in-class series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Technician II by the performance of a limited range of duties. Employees at this level receive close instruction or assistance. Maintenance Technician IIDEFINITION:Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled water and wastewater plant maintenance tasks; and performs technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Technician I, by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the ability to perform troubleshooting problems and making repairs with minor supervision. Employees in this class are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility. This position receives general supervision from the Plant Maintenance Superintendent and exercises no supervision. Duties and ResponsibilitiesMaintenance Technician IThe duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and repair work under the supervision of the maintenance technician crew leader for all water/wastewater treatment plant equipment which may include conveyors, heavy-duty pumps, engine-driven generator sets, blowers, sedimentation bridges and collectors, and mechanical bar screens.
  • Assist in the breakdown and overhaul of major pump systems; remove and replace necessary parts; install pump systems upon completion of overhaul.
  • Assist in performing preventive maintenance on all water and wastewater treatment plant equipment according to established schedules; coordinate repairs with operations and supervisory staff; conduct regular inspections of parts in a timely and efficient manner to prevent major breakdowns.
  • Repair treatment plant parts; become familiar with the operation of a variety of light equipment and various hand tools including backhoes, bush hogs, grinders, drills, welders, overhead cranes, cutting torches, power saws, boom trucks, pumps, and electrical panel boxes.
  • Inspect and assist in the repair of lift stations; oil and lubricate various pumps and motors as needed; assist with the repair of water and sewer lines as needed; assist in shut down and startup of plant(s) to replace valves and motors.
  • Perform various ground maintenance tasks at the water/wastewater plants and various lift stations and water towers including trimming shrubs, mowing, and edging.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintenance Technician IIThe duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Perform the full array of complex maintenance and repair work on all water/wastewater treatment plant equipment which may include conveyors, heavy-duty pumps, engine-driven generator sets, blowers, sedimentation bridges and collectors, and mechanical bar screens.
  • Break down and overhaul major pump systems; remove and replace necessary parts; install pump systems upon completion of overhaul.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all water and wastewater treatment plant equipment according to established schedules; coordinate repairs with operations and supervisory staff; conduct regular inspections of equipment; repair or replace parts in a timely and efficient manner to prevent major breakdowns.
  • Repair and/or fabricate water/wastewater treatment plant parts; operate a variety of light equipment and various hand tools including backhoes, bush hogs, grinders, drills, welders, overhead cranes, cutting torches, power saws, boom trucks, pumps, electrical panel boxes.
  • Inspect and repair lift station pumps, motors, and associated equipment; oil and lubricate various pumps and motors as needed; assist with the repair of water and sewer lines as needed; replace valves pumps, and motors.
  • Perform various ground maintenance tasks at the water/wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, sanitary sewer lift stations, and water storage tanks and sites including trimming shrubs, mowing, weed eating, and edging.
  • Follow established safety policies and procedures; participate in safety meetings and training.
  • Document work activities and complete work orders as assigned; provide input in maintenance group meetings and make supervisor(s) aware of maintenance activity concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements Education, Training, and Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment maintenance.
  • Six (6) months minimum of mechanical experience. Preference may be given to applicants who have field-related additional education, training, licensing, or exceed the minimum qualifications for this position.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • A valid state driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a Class D Wastewater Treatment Operator and a Class D Water Operator License issued by TCEQ.
Special Requirements:Utilities Department team members are considered essential employees for the community and play a critical role in maintaining and restoring water and wastewater services during emergencies.
