Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, the Maintenance Technician performs a variety of general maintenance and repairs to ensure building systems operate efficiently and the buildings remain in good physical condition.
Essential Functions
* Maintain and repair various HVAC systems, including but not limited to low-pressure steam and hot water boiler systems, heat pump systems, chilled water systems, DX cooling systems & VAV systems.
* Ability and knowledge to work with 115-volt, 230-volt, 277-volt, 460-volt and 480-volt circuits.
* Troubleshoot and repair electrical breakdowns.
* Repair and install plumbing fixtures.
* Operate a power drain opening cable machine.
* Ability to sweat copper fittings, thread steel pipe and glue PVC pipe.
* Ability to run gas pipe, boiler pipe, domestic water pipe, drain and waste pipe and cast-iron pipe
* Clean and treat chemical traps, grease traps, and clay traps.
* Basic framing skills using wood or steel studs.
* Drywall installation & repair. Ability to neatly tape, mud, and paint.
* Repair damaged wood furniture and fixtures to include dormitory stoves/ovens, microwaves and refrigerators.
* Install classroom fixtures; boards, storage bins, display cases, TV's, projectors and screens.
* Install or repair interior ceilings & floor coverings, mechanical fixtures such as gearboxes, shafts, pumps and fans and equipment used in kitchens, maintenance, and administrative offices.
* Repair various exterior roof surfaces and broken glass with basic skills in cutting and glazing.
* Assist Grounds Department with snow removal when needed.
* Assist with special events; set-up, visitor shuttle, and tear down.
* Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the University's discretion.
Minimum Education and Experience
* High school diploma or GED and three years experience directly related to the essential functions required. Experience in an education facility a plus.
* Post-secondary trade or vocational school certificate preferred.
* Certification in HVAC. Class II or better 40CFR for refrigeration systems a plus.
* Three years of experience directly related to the essential functions required with experience in an educational facility a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Mechanical aptitude, ability to use shop mathematics and manual dexterity required.
* Ability to apply quality and safety standards.
* Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery.
* Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet.
* High level of self-motivation and proven ability to work with little supervision
Physical Demands
* Appreciable physical strain, including lifting, bending, stretching, standing, walking in outdoor and indoor terrains, including up/downstairs.
